This Senior Economist Nature role is an exceptional Cambridge-based position with hybrid working. It sits within the nature economy team, focusing on the intersection of biodiversity and the economy.
You will play a critical role in enhancing technical expertise on the connections between the state of nature, the economy, and human wellbeing. The role involves advancing the use of natural capital information to transform the relationship between the economy and nature, promoting sustainable economic progress through collaboration between public and private sectors. Key responsibilities include:
1. Understanding and promoting actors' roles in transitioning to a socially just and ecologically sustainable economy.
2. Promoting natural capital approaches, including ecosystem accounting, and developing methodologies, tools, and mechanisms for biodiversity valuation in decision-making processes.
3. Mapping and valuing ecosystem assets to improve decision-making across value chains.
4. Developing cross-sectoral efforts for integrated natural capital management, aligning incentives across social, economic, and environmental pillars.
5. Strategically developing priority areas for the team.
You will have
Ideally, you will hold an undergraduate or master’s degree, or equivalent experience, in environmental or ecological economics.
Proven experience with international organisations, government agencies, or the private sector on natural capital, ecological or environmental economics, ecosystem accounting, or related policies. Experience in developing or applying nature-related assessments, measuring impacts on biodiversity and natural capital, and familiarity with private sector standards and frameworks. Ability to manage strategic partnerships with stakeholders such as governments, NGOs, businesses, academia, and financial institutions.
You should have a successful record in managing complex, interdisciplinary projects, overseeing high-quality delivery, leading project teams, and coaching staff.
Experience in securing funding from private or public sources, including foundations, financial institutions, research bodies, or UN organisations.
Strong interpersonal and project management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to motivate staff. Excellent communication skills, including writing, presenting, and facilitating for diverse audiences. Fluency in English is essential; additional UN languages are desirable.

Salary: GBP £41,500 to £49,000 per annum, depending on experience.
