Job Overview

As a Phlebotomist, you will play an essential role in supporting clinical teams by collecting high-quality blood samples that enable accurate diagnosis and effective treatment decisions.

You will work across Frimley Park Hospital, as well as local sites including Farnham Hospital and Aldershot Centre for Health. Your work will span inpatient wards and outpatient departments, ensuring timely and safe sample collection for laboratory testing.

Full training and structured supervision will be provided to develop your skills in venepuncture, infection prevention, patient communication and specimen handling. You will be supported every step of the way to build confidence and competence in this vital clinical role.

Main duties of the job

As a Key Member Of The Team, You Will

Obtain safe and accurate blood samples from adult patients in ward and outpatient settings
Train to undertake paediatric phlebotomy (ages 10–16) following competency assessment
Ensure all specimens are correctly labelled, handled and transported in line with Trust policy
Select appropriate equipment and apply approved venepuncture techniques
Maintain patient dignity, comfort and safety at all times
Adhere strictly to infection prevention, health and safety, and risk management procedures
Recognise clinical factors that may affect sample quality
Provide a professional, calm and reassuring service to patients
Work flexibly across sites to meet service needs

The department operates Monday to Friday, 08:00–17:00, with rotational bank holiday cover. Flexibility is essential.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

This is an entry-level Band 2 position with a structured pathway to Band 3 upon successful completion of training and competency assessments. Comprehensive supervision and ongoing development will be provided to support your progression.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

4 GCSES including English and Maths.
Trained in Phlebotomy

Desirable criteria

Aspirations to achieve relevant QCF.
Venepuncture certificate or evidence of training

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

Ability to work methodically and accurately, paying attention to detail
Working with members of the public
Computer Literacy
Good communication skills.

Desirable criteria

Knowledge of medical terminology

Experience

Desirable criteria

Worked as a Phlebotomist in the NHS
Previous experience in a Health care environmet
Health care experience with direct patient care
Evidence of self development

Special Requirements

Essential criteria

Ability to work in environment with frequent exposure to body fluids and biological hazards and for prolonged periods of standing and bending
Ability to stand and bend for prolonged periods
Can undertake an initial 6-week training programme running concurrently over five days per week.

Desirable criteria

Ability to travel between suits.
