Qualified RHS level 2 or equivalent a horticulturist and hands-on gardener, with experience in hard landscapingknowledgeable about plants, with a great eye for detailexperienced with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, and with some knowledge of maintenance confident in talking to a variety of people and building positive relationships quickly able to work within a team of colleagues and volunteers as well as on your own able to keep to time, plan and meet deadlinesGardenerSissinghurst is a highly personal garden planned by two people whose artistry was matched by their plant knowledge and who had an individual point of view. To perpetuate a garden made by two such individuals requires gardeners not only with supreme horticultural knowledge and skill but also gardeners with vision, sensitivity and most importantly an instinctive feeling for the spirit of the place. All these things will help you develop a solid foundation to take your next confident step into a leadership role. Under the guidance of Head Gardener Troy Smith and his team, you’ll gain practical hands-on experience in the art and craft of horticulture. There’ll be a particular focus on the approach of the garden’s founders whilst also seeking to innovate and welcome fresh ideas. The scholarship will give you a deeper understanding of topics including soil management, rose pruning, garden design, hedge care and plant health, with flexibility to focus on particular areas of interest. In addition to these specialist skills, this opportunity will also provide you with essential skills in management, leadership, project management and working with the media, topics not traditionally taught as part of typical horticulture courses. This scholarship has been designed to help prepare high performing Gardeners to be ready to take on a Head Gardener position.
