Senior Lawyer
Salary Range - £56, to £69,

Role Purpose
To provide high quality, strategic and commercial legal advice to the organisation across all core business activity, ensuring it operates within its statutory framework and business model.
The role is based at our head office in Peterborough. CITB are currently operating hybrid working arrangements with the expectation that team members are in the office a minimum of 3-4 days per month and in addition as required for meetings or otherwise.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
2. To work with a high degree of autonomy on complex legal matters, leading and managing your own portfolio of matters, as well as working collegiately with the other solicitors in the Legal Team to deliver an effective legal service to the organisation.
3. Advising on the scope and extent of CITB’s statutory framework and powers.
4. Interpret statutes, statutory instruments and other legal regulations to ensure organisational compliance.
5. Proactively identify legal issues at the earliest opportunity and use high level competencies to develop and advise on strategies and/or innovative solutions to address them.
6. Take a proactive approach to risk management, ensuring risks and issues are identified, addressed, reported and, where appropriate, escalated.
7. Assess and evaluate organisational threats/opportunities as a consequence of the legal environment and legislative changes.
8. Use a range of persuasion and influencing skills to secure strategic outcomes that are legally compliant.
9. Advise on and draft the legal arrangements for contracts with commercial and other service/product providers.
10. Assess medium/long term fit of major contractual obligations with organisational strategic objectives.
11. Facilitate and support risk management (particularly commercial and legal) by establishing standards for contractual arrangements for products and services with customers, suppliers and end users.
12. Support the exploitation and protection of intellectual property rights relating to organisational products and services.
13. Review the effectiveness of major current contracts with senior management and identify areas for development and improvement.
14. To provide in-house legal advice in all areas of law relevant to the organisation including, without limitation, public/regulatory, contract, commercial, procurement, intellectual property, data protection, freedom of information property, employment, environmental.
15. Where authorised by the Head of Legal, commissioning external legal advice.
16. Legally represent the organisation as required, including at tribunals or courts.
17. Provide advice to the ITA / Levy Compliance Team where required.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
18. Qualified solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive or other qualified lawyer with some public sector experience.
19. Must be qualified to practice in England and Wales.
20. Significant post qualification experience in one or more of the following areas of law (in order of priority):

30. Experience working in-house ideally in the public sector with additional private practice experience in a relevant area an advantage.
31. Experience working with colleagues at all levels including at Board and Executive level.
32. Effective use of analytical and innovative thinking and application, specifically (but not exclusively) in relation to the interpretation of law and complex issues/information.
33. High level of literacy, presentation and verbal communication skills and ability to express yourself clearly and simply.
34. Able to manage a varied and complex caseload and respond to competing priorities from a wide range of colleagues/third parties whilst ensuring effective use of time and resource.
35. Negotiation, influencing and diplomacy skills in order to be able to achieve the overall right outcome for CITB.
Desirable
36. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Packages (primarily Windows: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
37. A proficient level of IT skills.
38. Experience of managing provision of additional legal services from external provider.
39. Experience of working with a legal case management software.
