Broomfield SILC is a generic special school for pupils aged 2 to 19 years with 4 sites: our main site and 3 partnership sites at Windmill Primary, Rodillian Secondary and Future Steps Hub (White Rose Business Park). The SILC is based in the South of Leeds and caters for a wide range of needs from moderate learning difficulties; severe learning difficulties; complex and multiple learning needs; Autism and social and emotional and mental health needs. Some students have additional needs – physical; medical; speech and language; visual, hearing or sensory impairment. We are a very popular choice for parents and carers and currently have pupils on roll.

Broomfield secured a ‘Good’ Ofsted in March where inspectors commented that leaders have ‘high ambitions’ and ‘high aspirations for all pupils’ and that ‘staff are proud to work in our school’. I am very proud of our school community where staff are committed to supporting young people to fulfil their potential and prepare them fully for their future, particularly focusing on communication, independence, and emotional regulation.

We are exciting to share that our school is going to be rebuilt and will open to an additional young people in September. We are currently in the process of designing and planning the internal and external areas to ensure we will have an environment that fully supports the needs of our learners and our school community.

We are looking for an experienced Site Operative who can contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school, supporting the Facilities Manager to ensure we have a safe, engaging environment; which is fit for daily use and is the best possible environment for our young people to be educated, and our staff to work.

The role will ensure the effective and efficient day-to-day maintenance and security of the school premises, contributing to a safe and welcoming environment for pupils, staff, and visitors across all 4 sites.

We are looking for a highly motivated and committed Site Operative who works well as part of a team and is passionate regarding improving the environment for our learners and staff. You will need the ability to work under pressure, organise and prioritise workload and meet deadlines. You will understand; and have empathy with the issues facing children/young people with special educational needs and disabilities and their families.

The successful candidate will need to be able to work both independently and as part of a committed team. You will need to be deliver a high standard of Facilities support, including building maintenance; security and Health & Safety compliance.

The successful candidate will be flexible and have proven experience in a similar role. The role requires an effective communicator and excellent interpersonal skills and be committed to child safety and well-being.

4. Proven experience in building maintenance and repair.
5. Proven experience in the use of a wide range of hand and power tools (e.g., drills, saws, sanders, grinders, ladders, lifting equipment).

Role:

To ensure the effective and efficient day-to-day maintenance and security of the school premises, contributing to a safe and welcoming environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.

Main Duties:

Security

17. Lock/unlock school buildings and areas
18. Undertake regular security checks and identify security risks
19. Monitor fire safety equipment and carry out fire drills
20. Operate and respond to alarm systems where appropriate, outside of any specialist monitoring brief
21. Monitor CCTV or surveillance equipment where appropriate
22. Liaise with police, security and surveillance contractors
23. Undertake lettings and carry out associated clerical tasks
24. Provide emergency access to the school site

Maintenance

25. Undertake appropriate repairs e.g., redecorating and fixing
26. Undertake minor/simple repairs e.g., minor plumbing, changing light bulbs unblocking drains
27. To organise and carry out various maintenance duties to ensure that the general upkeep and maintenance of the premises is satisfactory, as per specific schedule for your school.
28. To organise and carry out minor decoration works as required
29. To organise and carry out minor improvement work e.g., erecting shelves, notice boards, bookshelves etc. as agreed with the Facilities Manager
30. To be responsible for the operation of a preventative planned maintenance programme and for routine inspections of the buildings, fixtures, fittings, furniture, premises and grounds to assess for minor work or repairs required to be carried out to maintain safe and satisfactory conditions
31. Operation and maintenance of heating plant and lighting systems
32. To oversee and monitor the electrical testing of portable electrical appliances and to maintain the appropriate records
33. Undertake regular site inspections and identify and record repair and maintenance requirements
34. Identify defects and record repair and maintenance requirements
35. Collect and assemble waste for removal
36. Undertake emergency and specialist cleaning tasks
37. Undertake cleaning duties such as graffiti removal, litter-picking
38. Provide emergency access to the school site
39. Coordinate and manage deliveries to the school site
40. Monitor and feedback to the Facilities manager regarding performance of contracts against specified standards
41. Liaise with contractors, including Cleaning Staff
42. Ensure that satisfactory levels of caretaking, cleanliness and hygiene are achieved and maintained through the whole of the premises
43. Ensure that pathways and all other external hard surface areas are kept clean, free of litter and weeds and that they are gritted or salted when required during wintry conditions
44. Maintain specialist equipment as required

Resources

45. Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and productive working environment
46. Ensure timely and accurate design, preparation and use of specialist equipment/resources/materials
47. To assist in safety audits of the premises and contribute to relevant risk assessment activity
48. Promote and ensure the health and safety of pupils, staff and visitors (in a accordance with appropriate health and safety legislation) at all times

Supervision and organisation

49. Demonstrate and assist in the safe and effective use of specialist equipment/materials.
50. The banking of cash on behalf of the school, such duties to include the transportation of cash from the school to the banking agent and vice versa
51. Provide specialist advice and guidance as required
52. Portering duties e.g., delivering mail, moving furniture and equipment
53. Assisting in management, administration and operation of lettings system
54. Monitor and manage stock within an agreed budget, cataloguing resources and undertaking audits as required
55. Where appropriate to organise and administer the use and maintenance of all school vehicles

In addition:

56. Keep abreast of current guidance, requirement and good practice; complying with health and safety policies and procedures
57. Promote and ensure the health and safety of pupils (staff and visitors) at all times
58. Develop good working relationships with outside agencies and stakeholders –pupils, parents/carers, teachers and professionals
59. Present a positive personal image, contributing to a welcoming school environment
60. Comply with the policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
61. Be aware of and support difference and ensure equal opportunities for all
62. Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
63. Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required
64. To undertake any other duties that are commensurate with the post
65. To be responsible for safeguarding all pupils and promoting their welfare by adhering to all child protection procedures.
66. All duties outlined are within the provisions of the Local Agreement for Superintendents.

Any Special Conditions of Service:

There is a requirement to submit to an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau background check. Term time working. There may be a need to occasionally work outside of school hours and off school premises, as required by the school. No smoking policy.
