About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Optical Modeling Engineer/ Camera Systems Engineer to develop and validate optical and imaging models for an advanced end-to-end camera simulation pipeline. This role involves working alongside optics, camera hardware, graphics, and imaging algorithm experts to explore next-generation camera technologies for products across AR, VR, smart glasses, and next-generation imaging systems.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys combining first-principles optics, simulation, and practical camera system validation.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and validate optical and imaging models within a full camera simulation pipeline (lens → sensor → ISP).
* Work closely with internal optics and camera teams to understand modeling requirements and improve simulation fidelity and performance.
* Collaborate with software partners using tools such as Synopsys, Ansys, Code V, and Zemax to understand implementations, limitations, and model constraints.
* Partner with developers working on graphics rendering, sensor modeling, and other simulation components to ensure cohesive end-to-end behavior.
* Conduct experiments, gather data, and compare simulations with physical systems to validate modeling accuracy.
* Research and apply latest advances in imaging modeling technologies for realistic camera behavior simulation.
* Contribute to development of new calibration and metrology methodologies.
* Support prototyping and feasibility studies for new camera architectures.
Required Qualifications
* Strong experience in imaging optics design, optical modeling, or lens system optimization.
* Hands-on programming experience modeling complex lens behaviors using Python or MATLAB or C++
* Expertise with optical design and ray-tracing tools such as Code V, Zemax, or equivalent.
* Deep understanding of the image formation process, including:
* Optical aberrations & PSF
* Fourier optics
* Sensor noise
* Spectral characteristics
* Sampling/aliasing
* Ability to independently own projects from concept to delivery.
* 10+ years relevant industry experience preferred
Preferred/Good-to-Have Skills
* Experience developing or extending optical simulation tools.
* Experience with imaging system calibration, characterization, or metrology.
* Knowledge of image quality evaluation (MTF, SNR, distortion, color accuracy).
* Familiarity with modern image sensors, raw pipelines, and ISP algorithms.
* Previous work in camera system R&D, computational imaging, or simulation-heavy environments.
