* Full-time salary: £33,002 – £35,608 (potential progression to £39,906)
* Grade: 6
* Part‑time (18.75 hours per week)
* Fixed-term contract up to April 2027

Background

The Research Programmes and Infrastructure team, part of the College of Medical & Dental Sciences Research Office, supports high‑value, strategically important projects and programmes. We partner with academics and organisations to maximise the impact of funded research and lead renewal development for large infrastructure awards.

The Project Officer role is embedded within the Birmingham Centre for Observational Studies (BiCOPS) and the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit.


Role Summary

The post holder will join a team of Professional Services staff providing management and administrative support for the Perioperative Medicine for Older People undergoing Surgery Scale Up (POPS‑SUp) study.

They will support the BiCOPS Management Team to deliver the POPS‑SUp study in line with funder milestones, working with UK academic staff, the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit, and other BiCOPS staff.

Main Duties

* Support Project Management Committees, workstreams, and working groups.
* Assist Project Managers and Programme Managers with dissemination of key project outcomes.
* Prepare progress reports for committee meetings, project planning, and deliver on sub‑projects.
* Draw up project plans, including key performance indicators and milestones.
* Track milestones and key performance indicators.
* Assist with stakeholder management and maintain regular contact with national stakeholders.
* Assess and escalating issues and risks appropriately.
* Assist in managing project resources and budgets.
* Develop communication plans, presentations, and promote project outcomes.
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of project management methodologies.
* Determine short‑term priorities to maximise quality, efficiency, and continuity.
* Assist with project evaluation and review.
* Promote equality and diversity, fostering an inclusive culture.
* Undertake other duties as reasonably requested by Line Manager.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

* Qualified to UK level 5 (e.g., Foundation degree, HND) or equivalent.
* Project management experience.
* Understanding of applied health research.
* Experience providing administrative support to research delivery.
* Excellent IT skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office and custom systems and databases.
* Experience using reference manager software for academic publications.
* Knowledge of university financial and contract systems; experience of budget management.
* Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 protected characteristics and active promotion of equality in daily work.


Dimensions

The role will not require line‑management or a budget.


Planning and Organising

The role holder will forward‑plan and deliver project plans, reporting to internal and external stakeholders within defined systems and processes while recommending improvements.


Problem Solving and Decision Making

Expected to assist in delivery of the POPS‑SUp study, assess and raise risks, and recommend improvements. Will operate within constraints set by project leads and boards.

Day‑to‑day operational decisions will be supported by the Project Lead and Board, enabling informed delivery decisions.


Internal and External Relationships

Key liaison and coordination role on this project, involving internal and external stakeholders.
