The Royal College of Art (RCA) invites applications for a part-time Research Associate to join the AI-Design Lab (AiDLab) - a pioneering collaboration between the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU) and the RCA, funded by Hong Kong's InnoHK programme. AiDLab explores how artificial intelligence and design can address major challenges of the 21st century, with industry-focused, interdisciplinary research across:
1. AI in Fashion Design
2. AI in Textile & Apparel Quality Control
3. AI in Ergonomic Design
About the Project
You will work on ANTLER I, which advances AI capabilities in digitised haute couture embroidery - preserving rare craftsmanship while innovating for the future of luxury fashion. This project bridges artisanal skills and computational design, building digital archives and new modes of passing on specialist textile knowledge.
The Role
Working 10.5 hours per week, you will support the Principal Investigators in delivering research that combines artisanal processes, computational design, and insights into the luxury industries. You will contribute to:
* Gathering and analysing datasets of computational embroidery
* Exploring computation as craft for future fashion
* Preparing conference papers, publications, presentations, and exhibitions
* Collaborating with industry partners and HKPU colleagues
About You
You will have:
* A Master's degree (or equivalent research experience) in design, textiles, or a related field
* Subject knowledge in textile testing and materials characterisation
* Experience in academic or commercial research projects
* Understanding of research ethics, integrity, and data handling
* Strong communication, writing, and presentation skills for diverse audiences
* A collaborative approach and flexibility to engage with varied project tasks
Experience with HE/industry collaborations in textile development or computational textiles is highly desirable.
Why Join Us?
This is an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of craft and technology, shaping how AI can preserve and transform luxury fashion for the future. You will be part of an international, interdisciplinary team working with leading academics, industry experts, and designers. #J-18808-Ljbffr
