What is the purpose of the role and expectations?
As our Design Manager you are responsible for supporting both the tender process and live projects. At tender stage your role will be to provide Design Management support on tenders to manage all aspects of the design process. For live projects, you will be part of the development and implementation of a construction phase design management strategy. As the appointed Design Manager you will monitor and support those to ensure process and compliance is being followed.
What will be my core responsibilities?
* Co-ordination of the design process from bid through to live projects.
* Production of Design Management Plans/Design Control file and ensuring requirements of the plan are achieved within the timeframe set by the tender and construction programmes.
* In conjunction with the Project team ensure effective Design drawing production schedule/Information Required Schedule produced/issued/agreed/monitored.
* Support project team in satisfying BREEAM/C4SH/Eco homes etc requirements
* Active interrogation of designs to ensure safe, compliant, buildable and cost-effective solutions. Carrying out of value engineering to all relevant aspects of the design
* Support the site teams and their supporting managers in understanding how to Represent the company/project in design meetings, and ensure they are chairing those meetings where appropriate.
* Interface between the client, design team and design portion contractors. Ensure that the clients’ brief is communicated and understood by the designers and project team.
* Management of change control, ensuring liaison with the project commercial team. Communication of implications of any change to the client.
* Track and manage discharge of planning conditions and Building control approvals
* Advise on the suitability of consultants and design portion subcontractors.
* Preparation of design appointment appendices in conjunction with the project’s operational and commercial team.
What skills and experience do I need to be successful in this role?
* Educated to HNC or Degree level or equivalent in construction related subject.
* Demonstrable Pre and Post Contract experience in Design Management with Operational background preferably at Senior Project Management Level.
* Public sector experience preferably education
* Proven track record of Risk Management and Value Engineering.
* Full understanding of relevant and current construction legislation, regulation, codes of practice and guidelines.
* Working knowledge of sustainable design, BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes
* Excellent knowledge of current design and construction techniques including available products in the marketplace.
* Innovative thinker and problem solver
* Strong influencing and persuasion skills.
* Ability to understand and answer design related questions from Pre-Qualification and Tender Questionnaires
