Postdoctoral Researcher in Maritime Decarbonisation and Renewable Energy (07-Month Fixed Term)
Are you passionate about advancing Maritime Decarbonisation and Renewable Energy through groundbreaking research? Southampton Solent University has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join our vibrant research team as part of Innovate UK’s project ‘Wightlink FastCat’.
About ‘Wightlink FastCat’: The project has been funded through the UK Government’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 6 (CMDC6), delivered by Innovate UK for the Department for Transport (DfT) under the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme.
In partnership with M3MAS Limited, Wightlink Limited, Ameresco Limited, Southampton Solent University, and Supply Chain Analysis Ltd, this seven-month feasibility study will design a roadmap to eliminate diesel engine use while Wightlink’s high-speed passenger ferries are docked at Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde Pier Head.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct innovative research on the Wightlink FastCat project, focusing on in-port energy demand, assessing renewable shore-side power systems, and evaluating zero-emission technologies.
* Design and perform experiments using Solent University’s Engine Room Simulator to validate models and explore practical decarbonisation solutions.
* Produce technical reports, engage with industry stakeholders, and support dissemination of project findings.

Who We’re Looking For
* A PhD in a relevant subject area and/or relevant professional/industry experience in marine engineering or a closely related field is preferred.
* Candidates with an MSc or PhD nearing completion with research experience and a strong publication record will also be considered for the role of Postdoctoral Researcher.
