Bradley David Associates is working with a leading financial services business on the search for an experienced
Medical Underwriter
to join their centralised
Underwriting Research, Development and Standards (RDS) team
. You will work within the Underwriting Standards department.
As part of this specialist group, you will contribute to shaping and maintaining underwriting philosophies, processes, and standards that support consistent, high-quality decision-making across our Insurance Division.
In this role, you'll balance case underwriting and audit responsibilities with developing and enhancing underwriting practices. You will also act as a trusted expert, providing case support and technical guidance to operational teams.
* Salary: £45,000 - £58,000 dependent on experience
* Bonus: 10-15%

Key Responsibilities
* Deliver fair, consistent underwriting decisions within your authority, assessing applications, medical evidence, and team referrals.
* Contribute to the design, review, and enhancement of underwriting philosophies, processes, and controls, ensuring compliance with company and industry standards.
* Lead and deliver allocated projects (small to medium scale), leveraging team expertise to drive outcomes.
* Provide training and coaching to underwriting and operational teams, identifying skill gaps and ensuring knowledge transfer.
* Support less experienced underwriters through guidance, second opinions, and case coaching, particularly on complex cases.
* Conduct quality reviews of underwriting decisions, ensuring alignment with standards and providing constructive feedback.
* Identify, escalate, and help manage risks in line with company policy.
* Maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, reinsurers, medical advisors, and third-party providers.
* Stay current with industry developments to advise, guide, and support both underwriting teams and senior management.
About You
* Proven experience in a medical underwriting team, with experience across underwriting operations and/or development.
* Recognised underwriting authority across one or more product lines:
Enhanced Annuities, Life, Income Protection, or Critical Illness
.
* Strong understanding of medical underwriting risk factors and industry standards (including the ABI Statement of Best Practice on genetics).
* Experience underwriting across multiple product lines and using underwriting manuals and tools effectively.
* Skilled in auditing, quality reviewing, and providing constructive feedback.
* Clear and confident communicator, able to simplify complex information and influence stakeholders at all levels.
* Comfortable delivering training, coaching, and presentations to both individuals and groups.
* Proactive learner, committed to staying updated on industry and market changes.

Qualifications
* Progress towards or completion of the
Diploma in Life and Disability Underwriting, CII
, or other recognised industry qualifications is desirable.
