Overview
Operations and Failure Management Placement (13 months) at Airbus Defence and Space. Start date: 20 July 2026. Location: Stevenage. Duration: 13 months. Internship for undergraduates only. You may apply for multiple roles, but can progress in the selection process for only one position at a time.
What you will be doing
This role is a great opportunity to learn how the spacecraft operates in nominal and failure situations. You will collaborate with subsystem architects and other teams (e.g., Software) to define telecommands, data parameters, and flight operation procedures. You may help define the initial operational and FDIR concept in early design, or work on FDIR monitors, software interfaces, or testing Flight Operations Procedures during implementation. You will gain exposure to satellite design and interact with a range of engineers.
We work on missions including telecoms (e.g., OneSat Payload), Earth Observation, Science and Exploration missions (e.g., Vigil and ExoMars Rover).
Your role may involve different activities, such as:
* Defining operational constraints, recovery levels and actions in the early design phase
* Detailing FDIR monitors and interfaces with software
* Writing and testing Flight Operations Procedures
Responsibilities
* Ensure satellite operates in nominal and failure scenarios
* Collaborate with Functional Avionics and other teams to support satellite operations
* Assist in defining operational concepts and procedures
* Contribute to verification, testing, and parameter tuning related to FDIR
Requirements
Open to Undergraduates for the whole duration of the placement. Please indicate your graduation date on the application. Your application should include a CV and a Cover Letter outlining motivation and suitability for the role.
* Studying towards a degree in Aeronautical, Aerospace or Robotics Engineering, Electronic Design, or related field
* Experience with coding (e.g., C++, Java, Python)
* Problem-solving initiative; ability to handle complex situations
* Effective communication with a wide range of stakeholders
SECURITY CLEARANCE: You will be subject to a BPSS check and may need UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control depending on the role.

About us
Join the Operations and Failure Detection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) team within the Functional Avionics group in Stevenage. We oversee spacecraft operation from launch to end of life, collaborating with a range of disciplines to understand satellite behavior and respond to contingencies.
We work with multidisciplinary teams to define telecommands, data parameters, test Flight Operation Procedures, and tune FDIR parameters.
