Job title: Development Chemist Reports to: Technical Manager About the Company: IPS Adhesives is a global supplier of adhesive and related solutions to a wide variety of markets. The role covers operations for three brands, Scigrip for Structural Adhesives, Integra for Surfacing Adhesives and Unika covering kitchen products. The business is focused on solving problems and delivering value to our customers through great people, class leading adhesive technologies, and innovative and flexible packaging and service offerings. Job Description: Reporting to the Technical Manager, IPSA Europe, is responsible for conducting research, analysis, synthesis and experimentation on substances, for such purposes as product and process development and application, quantitative analysis and improvement of analytical methodologies. Carrying out tasks as required in compliance with IPSA Quality standards. Role accountabilities, expectations and responsibilities Operates or directs operation of laboratory equipment and instruments such as microscopes, centrifuge, agitators, viscometer, analytical balance scales, infrared spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, colorimeter, vacuum pump, exhaust systems and other equipment. Devises new equipment, and develops formulas, processes, and methods for solution of technical problems. Analyzes organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical and physical properties. Induces changes in composition of substances by introduction of heat, light, energy, and chemical catalysts. Conducts research on experimental products or manufactured products to develop new products and /or improve current products. Conducts testing of manufactured product(s) and / or newly developed product(s) for such qualities as stability, viscosity, volatility, density, absorption, flash point, boiling point, VOC emission levels or other characteristics or physical data. Conducts research into composition, structure, properties, relationships and reactions of matter. Confers with scientists, engineers and customers/potential customers regarding research, field test results, etc., and prepares technical papers and reports. Records test results and writes test reports describing procedures used. Prepares standards and specifications for processes, facilities, products and tests. Cleans, sterilizes and checks calibration dates or calibrates instruments as appropriate. Prepares and / or directs preparation of chemical solutions according to standard or desired formulas/formulations. Quantifies deficiencies and recommends chemicals or raw materials to be added to process solutions or product batches to correct or establish formulation required to meet specifications. Mounts loads or places samples in/on testing devices, instruments or equipment or directs the same. Makes minor adjustments, repairs or cleaning, to laboratory equipment or instruments, such as opening and closing valves, activating switches, setting guides, clearing away and disposing of test results or residual product. Performs all work in a manner providing for safety and health of self and co-workers. Assessing tasks for risks and implementing control measures Make recommendations for improvements to facilities or processes when needed. Maintain an efficient practical working environment. Detects and reports unsafe conditions or situations. Reports all unusual occurrences and incidents to supervisor. Assisting the development of the environmental health & safety efforts by creating COSHH assessment, operating procedures and test method procedure documents. Follow current QC and R&D laboratory systems and procedures. Implementing new systems and procedures when required. Strictly follow standard methods of test. Carry out work in accordance with ISO9001. The duties and responsibilities highlighted in this job description are indicative and may vary over time. Education and/or Work Experience Requirements: Education to degree level within chemistry, chemical engineering or other relevant scientific discipline or equivalent relevant experience. Two years’ experience in working with organic materials, plastics or other equivalent experience. Manufacturing or chemical industry experience desirable. An awareness of environment, health and safety issues. A strong understanding of chemistry and the relevant technologies. A good level of IT literacy including Microsoft Office packages and databases. Good organizational skills and a methodical approach to work. Familiarity with applicable ASTM and ISO performance standards and testing requirements, Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Key Competencies: Self-motivation and initiative.
