A vacancy has arisen for a Flight Lieutenant (Aircrew – Flying Pilot (Any)) to serve as Dep OC 1 AEF at MOD St Athan/Bro Tathan Airfield on Volunteer ex-Regular Reserve Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 02 February 2026. 6 FTS is the largest and most diverse military flying training school in the country. From its HQ at RAFC Cranwell, the school manages a broad range of flying tasks, from Elementary Flying training on University Air Squadrons to the provision of Air Experience Flying (AEF) for the Air Cadet Organisation. 1 AEF’s working week is flexible to meet the needs of business challenges. Deputy Officer Commanding 1 AEF. Delivery of air and ground instruction for ab-initio aircrew as well as conversion and currency training for experienced aircrew on the AEF. Additionally, you will be working as a member of a small team and be required to undertake a range of secondary duties associated with the supervision of flying and the management of the Squadron, including line management of staff. Furthermore, in addition to your duties with the AEF, but within the terms and conditions of VeRR, you will be required to carry out those duties associated with a commissioned officer of your rank. Specifically, you will be required to: Deliver air experience cadet flying to the ATC and CCF cadet organisations in accordance with extant RAF, HQ 22 Gp and HQ 6 FTS directives. The normal working week to be decided between the successful applicant and OC 1 AEF/OC UWAS in due course. Support OC 1 AEF in the formulation of the 1 AEF flying programme and delivery of the daily flying programme to ensure most efficient usage of personnel and equipment in achieving aims. Support OC 1 AEF with the monitoring of AEF pilot currency, recency as well as Convex AEF pilot flying progress and administration of AEF pilot flying records and documentation. Deliver supervision of the UWAS/1 AEF flying programme as Duty Instructor/Duty Pilot when directed. Deliver supervision of the UWAS/1 AEF flying task. Deliver change as directed by 6FTS, OC UWAS or OC 1 AEF. Support UWAS ground training activities on an opportunity basis as mutually agreed with OC UWAS in support of the ground training programme. Provide staff supervision during UWAS activities when delegated by OC UWAS in accordance with the unit and HQ 6 FTS Supervisory Care Directives. Support UWAS ground activities as directed by OC UWAS/OC 1 AEF in support of 2nd/3rd party unit assurance, external validations or standards visits. Support UWAS AT expeditions on a volunteer basis. Complete any specialist training courses to fulfil secondary duties, eg Flying Authorisers/Supervisors Course, Aviation Medicine Course, Flt Safety Officer or PCMIO courses. Complete Mandatory Training Courses as required by RAF policy to include but not limited to Human Factors & Error Management Training, Diversity & Inclusion Training, Advanced Care of the Trainee and Defence Train the Trainer Course. Complete other courses mandated by HQ 6 FTS for UAS/AEF staff. Lead and perform by example upholding RAF and societal values and standards. Act as an ambassador for diversity and inclusion. Support the zero tolerance policies regarding alcohol, substance abuse, harassment, and bullying.
