Overview

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

NHS Tayside’s Women, Children and Families Team are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician to join our dynamic service and make a real difference to patient care. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about delivering safe, effective, and person-centred care to support the development and implementation of our new local Paediatric Formulary.

You will work alongside our Specialist Paediatric Pharmacist, who is leading the formulary development. With this work now well underway, your role will focus on improving patient care and supporting the safe prescribing of paediatric medicines across NHS Tayside.

About the Role

This is a new, varied, and rewarding position where you will:

* Work across boundaries, liaising with a wide range of colleagues across the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
* Provide support to clinical services across both primary and secondary care in relation to paediatric medicines.
* Assist with formulary development and updates.
* Undertake medication reviews to ensure the formulary is embedded in practice and consistently applied.
* Support the roll-out of “Pill School”, teaching children and families how to swallow tablets and capsules instead of liquids.
* Contribute to medicines optimisation and safety initiatives for paediatric patients.
* Participate in audits, quality improvement projects, and data collection linked to formulary development.

Team and Support

You will be part of a friendly and supportive team committed to improving outcomes for children and families. You will receive robust support and be line-managed by the Specialist Paediatric Pharmacist for Paediatric Formulary, with additional support from the Lead Women, Children and Families Pharmacist and the wider WCF team.

There will also be close collaboration with the team responsible for the Tayside Adult Area Formulary, which has a 30-year history of ensuring safe, cost-effective use of medicines for adults. This is an exciting opportunity to create a similar legacy for paediatric patients.

Qualifications and Skills

* A dynamic team player with excellent communication, interpersonal, IT, time management, and organisational skills.
* Awareness of the importance of a local formulary (additional knowledge and training will be provided).
* A personal and professional philosophy that puts patients at the centre of service activity.
* Experience in medicines management, reviewing formulation options, and working with prescribers is desirable.
* Experience with paediatric medicines is advantageous; training in paediatric medicines and Pill School will be provided.
* Ability to adapt and work to tight deadlines.
* Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
* The ability to supervise and work effectively with both small and large groups of staff.
* A passion for service development and quality improvement projects. Formal NHS Quality Improvement training can be provided.

Essential

* To be considered for this post you must be registered as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
* Applicants must be willing to train to undertake the final accuracy check of dispensed medicines or already have a recognised accuracy checking qualification.

Successful candidates who do not meet the Band 5 criteria will undertake a Band 4 Pharmacy Technician career progression programme to support their professional development. On successful completion of the programme and an assessment/interview the candidate will advance to Band 5.
