We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, hardworking and motivated individual to join our team within a busy Intestinal Rehabilitation Unit, managing patients with severe intestinal failure, many of whom are living with stoma and fistula and requiring long term parenteral nutrition. The Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) is part of the multidisciplinary team and plays a vital role, providing holistic, patient-centred care which is planned and directed by health care professionals. Under the guidance and supervision of a registered nurse (RN), midwife or nurse associate (RNA) the HCSW will undertake a range of core clinical skills and depending on the area worked may include specific clinical skills relevant to the speciality. The post holder is expected to cover the duties of other HCSW colleagues within the range of the post holder's knowledge and skills.
Responsibilities
* Undertakes a range of delegated clinical care duties in hospital, community or other settings.
* Records patient observations and changes to patients' clinical conditions.
* Follows all London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) policies and provides a safe and person-centred environment for the treatment of patients.
* Provides reassurance and support to patients and carers/family.
* Provides information to enable the effectiveness of care to be evaluated and maintains records.
* Reports any concern regarding patient care.
* Finds all policies relating to good working practice within the clinical area and adheres to them.
* Participates fully in the delivery of planned nursing care at the direction of the registered nurse.
* Serves drinks and meals to patients and assists those requiring help.
* Assists in bed making and the disposal of soiled linen.
* Chaperones patients as necessary.
* Records temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry, fluid input and output, and reports findings to the nurse in charge of patient care.
* Collects and tests specimens as required and reports abnormalities.
* Ensures safekeeping of patients' property and valuables within Trust guidelines.
* Works collaboratively with others in the ward to ensure patients' needs are met.
* Seeks assistance when their competence is limited.
* Recognises and responds appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
Person Specification
Interview Essential
* GCSE or equivalent experience.
* Experience as a HCA or experience working in healthcare settings.
* Ability to demonstrate motivation/enthusiasm, reliability, caring, respectful behaviour.
* Able to work under pressure.
Desirable
* Fistula and stoma care experience.
* Surgical/Medical experience, colorectal and gastrointestinal experience.
* Knowledge of basic IT systems or willingness to undertake training.
* Able to maintain positive working relationships.
