Job Description
What will you be doing?
We’re looking for a Lead Mechanical Development Engineer to take the reins on complex product development within the electrical and power domain. This is a hybrid role based in Luton, where you’ll lead mechanical design activities on cutting-edge aerospace systems — focusing on performance, cost-efficiency, and design for manufacture.
Your main responsibilities will be:
* Take the lead in designing mechanical components and systems that meet both technical and cost requirements.
* Apply Design for Manufacturing principles to simplify production, reduce cost, and boost performance.
* Collaborate with procurement teams to provide accurate specs and drawings to support supplier quotes.
* Work closely with tooling and materials experts to choose the right materials and simplify manufacturing processes — especially for injection moulded parts.
* Drive down production costs through clever design choices and smart assembly strategies.
* Plan and support testing — both in the lab and in real-world conditions — to ensure systems are safe, reliable, and meet all performance benchmarks.
* Manage design reviews, milestone tracking, and technical risks throughout the development lifecycle.
* Make key design decisions and mentor junior engineers as part of a close-knit, fast-paced engineering team.
Who are we looking for?
* Are proactive, detail-oriented, and highly organised.
* Have strong technical instincts but also know when to involve the wider team.
* Can balance engineering excellence with cost and manufacturability.
* Enjoy being part of a fast-paced development environment and want to make a real impact.
You are...
* Passionate about engineering
* result-oriented
* proactive
Qualifications
Experience, skills and qualifications required:
* Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
* 5+ years' experience in mechanical product design and development — ideally within aerospace, automotive, or other regulated industries.
* Experience in cost reduction, component optimisation, and manufacturing simplification.
* Hands-on experience supporting prototype builds and testing.
* Familiar with verification & validation processes and confident working within the V-model lifecycle.
* Comfortable producing high-quality technical documentation, drawings, and specifications.
