Field research casual (three weeks)

Dundee
The James Hutton Institute
Posted: 7 January
Offer description

The work undertaken by The James Hutton Group is right at the top of the global agenda tackling problems such as the impact of climate change and threats to food and water security. We find scientific solutions to the challenges posed by the climate and nature crises on the sustainable management of land, crop and natural resources that support thriving communities.

Ecological Sciences are an innovative, multidisciplinary group of scientists who study the interactions between soil, plants, animals, humans and the environment with the aim of sustainable management of natural resources.

A temporary technical support is required for three weeks in February 2026 to assist with research relating to agricultural rotation and sustainable farming, regenerative agriculture including the impact of tillage on plant:soil interactions. The research is linked to the Scottish Government funded research programme. We need help with sampling two long-term field trials: Grieves House Tillage Trial (GHTT) and Grieves House North (GHN). GHTT is used for investigating the effects of tillage (ploughing vs non inversion tillage - (https://ghplatform.hutton.ac.uk/) and rotations on soil and crop productivity, especially linked to processes that occur between plant genotype, including cover crops and soil processes. GHN – is a continuous rotation of a diverse range of cover crops and spring barley. The post-holder will assist with the sampling of these trials using established protocols, including assessment of cover crop biomass and assistance in preparing and processing samples for analytical processing soil chemical and physical analysis.

To deliver effectively in this role you must have a background in science (e.g. Higher or A levels) with an interest in plants, the environment and soils. A demonstratable interest in agriculture. An understanding of the scientific process. A willingness to work in both laboratory and field conditions (noting that this post will occur in February 2026) and the ability to follow scientific protocols and accurately score data.

This post will be based in Invergowrie, Dundee; there will be a requirement for local travel to field sites.
