Job overview

This role is ideal for a dynamic individual with a passion for Acute and Emergency Medicine who can promote and educate on early intervention, risk management and safe discharge planning. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team within the Horton Therapy Clinical Lead’s department, supporting patients across the Emergency Department, Emergency Assessment Unit and Acute General Medical wards. The work involves early frailty assessment, discharge planning, and holistic care, with opportunities for teaching, supervisory and leadership roles.


Main duties of the job

Provide high‑quality, safe and effective Occupational Therapy to patients in fast‑paced acute settings. Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, conduct joint assessments, liaise with families and community teams, and deliver follow‑up treatment plans. Participate in quality improvement, clinical audit and research projects. Service is delivered seven days a week.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Communicate recommendations and clinical reasoning clearly and promptly.
* Use excellent communication and engagement skills to build effective teamwork.

* Carry out comprehensive assessments using frailty and risk tools.
* Develop and deliver evidence‑based treatment, rehabilitation and discharge plans.
* Evaluate patient progress and modify plans as needed.
* Assess mental capacity and obtain informed consent, working within legal frameworks.
* Maintain accurate records in electronic patient record systems.
* Mitigate patient and staff risk using risk frameworks and manual handling policies.
* Perform manual therapy techniques and therapeutic handling.
* Represent occupational therapy at multidisciplinary team meetings.
* Contribute to a seven‑day service.
* Maneuver rehabilitation equipment safely and support others in its use.
* Assist in supervision, teaching and appraisal of junior staff and assistants.
* Deputise for team leads when required.
* Plan and organise own time, patient caseload, meetings and training.
* Assist in planning junior staff, student and assistant timetables.
* Organise and contribute to the team's training and education programme.
* Educate multidisciplinary groups, patients and carers.
* Supervise undergraduate students and practice‑based learning.
* Adopt proactive learning from within and outside the occupational therapy profession.
* Maintain a portfolio for continuing professional development.
* Apply contemporary knowledge to acutely and generally medicine and rehabilitation.
* Participate in quality improvement and clinical audit through authorised projects.
* Implement evidence‑based practice through ongoing professional development.
* Apply national and local clinical standards.


Person specification


Qualifications

* Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
* HCPC registration


Experience

* Experience in Acute and/or Emergency Medicine
* Experience of MDT working
* Experience of discharge planning, including liaison with health and social care providers
* Evidence of participation in training, audits or quality improvement projects
