Locum Consultant in Paediatric Metabolic Medicine

Consultant in Paediatric Metabolic Medicine

Applications are invited for a full-time locum (10 PA per week) Consultant Metabolic Paediatrician to join the multidisciplinary Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IMD) team at Birmingham Children's Hospital. This post is designed to deliver Paediatric Inherited Metabolic Disorders services based at Birmingham Children's Hospital and support the departmental clinical research programme.


Main duties of the job

The Metabolic team at Birmingham Children's Hospital provides regional and national services covering a wide range of IMDs, supported by well established specialist laboratory, dietetic and nursing services. The postholder will be part of a large multidisciplinary team and is expected to have a cohesive and collaborative approach to teamworking. They will be expected to participate in audit, research and undertake management duties as required by the department. The team works closely with the adult IMD service based at University Hospitals Birmingham to deliver transition services.

There is dedicated clinical research time and a 1:5 on call commitment for the Inherited Metabolic Disorders service which includes telephone cover for South Wales and some weekends for South-West England. The appointee will join a busy, dynamic and research active department determined to improve outcomes for children with IMD. Eligible applicants should have certification of training (CCT) in Paediatric Metabolic Medicine (or equivalent training) or be within 6 months of completing certification at the time of interview.

Job responsibilities

The IMD Department at Birmingham Childrens Hospital provides tertiary services for the diagnosis, treatment and management for patients with the entire range of Inherited Metabolic Disorders for the West Midlands (population approximately 5.2 million). The West Midlands is one of the largest regions in the United Kingdom and has a population with a higher incidence of IMD than most other regions. The service is commissioned as a specialist service by NHS England.

The primary purpose of this post is to maintain and expand the existing service in Paediatric IMD at BCH by way of out-patient services, including the established outreach service to South Wales, in-patient liaison consultations (including the National Lysosomal Storage Disorders Service) in Birmingham Childrens Hospital and to help support the extensive departmental research programme. Special interests within the department at present include phenylketonuria, tyrosinaemia, lysosomal storage disorders, disorders of intermediary metabolism, liver-metabolic disease and the molecular genetics of complex metabolic disorders.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Medical Degree from a recognised University
* CCT in Paediatric Metabolic Medicine or equivalent or within 6 months of CCT in Paediatric Metabolic Medicine at time of interview.
* Higher Degree (MD/PhD etc)


Clinical Experience and Skills

* IMD experience to tertiary level.
* Appropriate progression of career to date.
* Have, or be prepared to develop, a subspecialist interest in IMD conditions in the context of the developmental needs of the service.
* Level 3 child protection training in last 2 years.
* Experience in managing a wide range of complex inherited metabolic disorders, including lysosomal storage disorders, in a tertiary setting


Research and training

* Significant experience in supporting undergraduate and postgraduate learning
* Willing collaborator
* Training the trainer course (or equivalent) in the last 3 years.
* GCP training in the last 2 years.
* Previous Personal Research Experience
* Track record of having participated in clinical trials.

* Career Objectives: Ability to demonstrate an understanding of current career pathway
* Ability to meet travel requirements of the job
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Able to cope with pressure from unexpected/urgent clinical situations
* Knowledge of wider health debate and NHS Structures, and current media issues.
* Ability to acknowledge that behaviour needs to modify to the situation and audience.
* Attendance at management training course
* IT Skills and familiarity with EPR software
