Job Overview
To support the delivery and operational management of Point of Care Testing (POCT) services across the BSPS organisation, with particular responsibility for supporting LabKit and community-based diagnostic services, ensuring equipment functionality, quality compliance, and effective service delivery.

Main duties of the job
* To maintain POC equipment as directed ensuring all protocols and quality standards are met.
* Work in accordance with departmental policies and standard operating procedures, to maintain high standards of patient safety.
* Be able to travel independently to any site where there are POCT devices in the Community and ensure good stock control of consumables and a centralised stock is present at other BSPS POCT sites.
* Maintain good communication within the POCT team in order to maximise efficiency through agreed priorities and to achieve the aims of Point of Care analysis on a daily basis.
* In liaison with other senior staff to ensure the department’s quality standards are maintained and to troubleshoot any areas failing to meet these standards.
* Participate in the audit of quality control measures within LabKit and Point of Care.
* To include departmental audits as necessary.
* To participate in IQC and other quality checks as necessary.
* To participate in the provision of External Quality Assessment services both in house and to external customers.
* Evaluate and implement new technologies to enable an improved and more efficient service.
* Work with other members of the POCT Team to achieve and maintain accreditation against relevant ISO standards and comply with national POCT guideline.
Qualifications
* For those without a suitable level 3 qualification the successful candidate would be expected (and supported by BSPS) to follow a course of study/training to gain an equivalent level qualification e.g. NVQ/QCF level 3/IBMS Certificate of Achievement.
* Relevant Science Degree (desirable).
Experience
* Involvement in carrying out laboratory testing including co-ordination, evaluation and service development.
* Proven understanding of clinical governance with risk management, its importance and its application.
* Previous POCT and/or laboratory experience.
* Experience of introducing service improvements.
* Training experience.
* Experience of stock control.
* Experience of planning workload of other team members to ensure service delivery.
* Experience of supervising junior staff and students and to provide training as requested.
* Able to regularly provide information of a sensitive and emotional nature to staff and service users where there may be barriers to understanding.
Skills & Knowledge
* Excellent time management and organisational skills to plan and prioritise a complex and unpredictable caseload efficiently.
* Provides & receives complex & sensitive information orally, and in writing & electronically form.
* Demonstrate advanced communication skills to convey complex diagnostic and technical information, overcoming barriers to communication.
* Accurate IT skills for e-mail and data entry for demographic, request & result entry onto Pathology LIMS.
* Ability to communicate complex, contentious and sensitive messages.
* Proven ability to build and maintain professional relationships with the multi-disciplinary team members.
* Computer skills including use of databases, spreadsheets, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other clinical support systems.
* Able to regularly provide information of a sensitive and emotional nature to staff and service users where there may be barriers to understanding.
Special Requirements
* Able to cope with using VDU equipment continuously on most days.
* Able to travel to any hospital sites as required by the service.
