Medical Retina Clinical Nurse Specialist
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites a registered nurse with ophthalmology experience to join our Medical Retina Clinical Nurse Specialist Team.
Job Overview
Our Medical Retina Suite offers a high‑volume intravitreal injection service in four dedicated injection rooms, operating six days per week (8am–6pm). This role expands a nurse’s scope of practice and provides advanced clinical training.
Key Responsibilities
* Undertake accredited training to become an independent non‑medical injector and deliver intravitreal injections.
* Conduct virtual and face‑to‑face patient reviews in line with Medical Retina pathways and clinical protocols.
* Provide a nurse‑led telephone and failsafe service, responding to patient queries, concerns and urgent safety issues.
* Collaborate with Medical Retina Consultants, the eye theatre team and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, high‑quality patient care.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Registration as a Nurse (NMC) with previous ophthalmology experience.
* Strong desire to expand scope of practice and undertake advanced clinical training.
* Excellent communication skills, able to provide clear advice and reassurance to patients.
* Ability to work independently once trained while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team.
Additional Information
The post forms part of a 6‑day service (Monday‑Saturday), operating between 8am and 6pm, and flexibility to support this rota is required. Full training will be provided to support development into the role of independent injector.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience – Essential
* Registered nurse on the relevant part of the NMC register
* Degree qualification or equivalent 120 credits at L6
* Post‑registration qualification within the area of speciality or equivalent experience
* Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies
* Evidence of supporting/ managing a range of learners in practice
* Evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
* Extensive post‑registration experience within specialist area
* Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service
* Understanding of personal accountability
* Confidence in own knowledge base, aware of learning needs and seeks guidance when appropriate
* Able to critically review and communicate clinical information
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience – Desirable
* Registered on MSc Pathway – completion of HTPA Competencies
* Acted in the role of Practice Assessor or supported the progression of learners
* Counselling qualification
* Palliative care course
