Band 6 AfC Clinical Pharmacist
NHS Lothian serves a population of approximately 1 million people, employs 35,000 people and is fundamentally focussed on improving the health and wellbeing of the population.
The NHS Lothian Primary Care Pharmacy and Medicines Service is undergoing an ambitious programme of transformation and integration. Pharmaceutical care is provided by a team of around 100 pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and administrators, working across General Practices covering the whole of Edinburgh.

We are creating innovative career pathways to develop clinical leaders and we are now looking for dynamic, highly motivated and enthusiastic pharmacists to join our expanding team. Edinburgh HSCP are delighted to offer opportunities to work closely with GPs, other practice staff, community pharmacists, care home staff, other members of the multi-disciplinary team and central team colleagues to support the development and application of high quality, safe, cost effective and evidence-based prescribing in the Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP).
These posts will give you the opportunity to develop your clinical and technical skills in practice to allow you to work within GP practices to provide holistic, patient-centred individualised care to improve the safety and effectiveness of individual’s medicines. There are also opportunities to become involved in joint projects/initiatives within the HSCP as required in accordance with identified local and national priorities.
You will receive support from a designated tutor, and the wider pharmacy team, as well as peer support from other foundation pharmacists. Successful applicants will be supported to complete the RPS Post Registration Foundation Training programme which equips pharmacists with a broad range of core skills via completion of learning outcomes, to become competent clinical practitioners. This course is inclusive of the independent prescribing qualification.
With a Masters in Pharmacy and current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council, applicants should have excellent communication, IT and organisational skills and be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team. Primary care experience is not essential as training will be fully supported, and you will receive dedicated time to develop in your working week.
This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/ record. If the post holder is not a current PVG member for the required regulatory group (i.e. child and/or adult) then an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before they can begin in post.
To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country.
