UHI Shetland is seeking a skilled Boat Helmsperson & maritime Instructor. In this role, you’ll support researchers, students, and external partners on coastal and offshore fieldwork while enjoying Shetland’s stunning maritime environment.
We are offering flexible hours up to full time (35 per week), with the freedom to balance your work with your lifestyle while making a meaningful contribution.
The successful candidate will:
1. Navigate Shetland’s coastal waters, experience hands-on, real-world marine environments while working on cutting-edge research projects.
2. Provide instruction and mentorship to students undertaking short courses and maritime courses, guide researchers, sharing your expertise to build practical skills, confidence, and a passion for marine science.
3. Support research that advances sustainable marine practices, environmental monitoring, and fisheries management, contributing to meaningful outcomes locally and beyond
4. Undertake and co-ordinate routine vessel maintenance and inspections
The successful candidate will have:
5. Extensive experience operating small to medium-sized vessels in coastal or offshore waters, particularly in inshore trawling.
6. Strong leadership, navigation, and seamanship skills, with the ability to stay calm and make decisions under pressure.
7. Relevant maritime certifications (Skipper’s License, STCW95, First Aid, medical) plus ability and willingness to undertake instructors training.
8. A motivated, professional approach and the ability to work collaboratively with researchers, students, and external partners.
