Job Summary
This position is for 6 months and supports the clinical and research needs of the department. The role is suitable for someone seeking sub‑specialty experience in Medical Retina. The post holder will perform slit lamp examination, fundus examination, OCT interpretation, and retinal laser, and will work in specialist AMD, diabetic, uveitis, and retinal genetics clinics alongside retinal consultants. They will discuss cases during weekly Retinal Multi‑Disciplinary Team meetings, attend specialist MR teaching sessions weekly, and present at North East Retina Group meetings twice a year. Sunderland Eye Infirmary is fully equipped with a twin main theatre suite and offers surgical training based on the candidate’s professional needs.
Responsibilities
* Support consultants to meet Trust targets for new patients and achieve 18‑week RTT.
* Maintain the high levels of patient satisfaction and provide a safe and sustainable service.
* Assist in the medical and surgical management of medical retina and glaucoma patients and audit outcomes.
* Teach and train junior doctors, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and medical students.
* Participate in service development within the sub‑speciality and across the Ophthalmology unit.
* Attend internal CPD held in the Ophthalmology Department.
* Participate in the emergency on‑call rota.
* Work outpatient clinics or sessions at Sunderland Eye Infirmary Outpatients Department, with clinic location flexible to service needs.
Qualifications
* Primary medical qualification.
* Full GMC registration and licence to practice.
* Previous ophthalmology experience with MRCOphth or equivalent.
* Evidence of ongoing professional development and good interpersonal and communication skills.
