Overview
The Northumbria Spinal Surgery Fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for a post-FRCS senior trainee to gain fellowship experience of Spinal Surgery. The post provides extensive clinical and surgical exposure in elective adult degenerative spinal disease. The spine department has over two decades of experience and currently comprises 3 Consultant spine surgeons ( Ata Kasis, Cyrus Jensen, Matthew Mawdsley ).
We are advertising a 10 month fixed term post, commencing in October 2025/ASAP.
Role and Responsibilities
The fellow will work within a Trauma and Orthopaedic department of 31 consultants and 4 fellows who are active in quality and cost improvement projects. The fellow will be expected to:
* Support the Orthopaedic Trauma rota at NSECH including on-call participation, particularly in the first 4 months, transitioning to an elective Spine focus in the latter 6 months.
* Contribute to a program to improve care for spine patients, including designing and launching the improvement program, and measuring and reporting progress.
* Engage with and complete a research project within the Spine department.
The department provides high-volume, low-complexity surgery as well as complex cervical and lumbar procedures and offers considerable exposure to anterior cervical and lumbar surgery. The fellow will work as part of a Spinal Multi-Disciplinary Team, including an Orthopaedic Specialty Trainee (Northern Deanery Training Program), Pain Management Consultants, Musculoskeletal Radiologists and Extended Scope Practitioners.

Requirements and Expectations
Eligible candidates will be post-FRCS, seeking to further develop fellowship-level expertise in spinal surgery. The candidate should be prepared to participate in on-call duties during the initial months and to focus on spine-specific responsibilities in the latter part of the fellowship.
