The post holder will be accountable for the planning, delivery, and monitoring of infection prevention and control, as well as decontamination services within the Trust, in accordance with the Code of Practice for the prevention and control of infections and related guidance (Healthcare Act 2008 hygiene code update 2015), Care Quality Commission, and other relevant regulatory standards.
The post holder will ensure strategies are developed and implemented to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) across the Trust, on behalf of the Director for Infection Prevention and Control (DIPC).
This will include leading the development and implementation of an effective, Trust-wide Infection Prevention and Control service, including decontamination.
They will be a highly visible, experienced leader providing assurance to the Board that systems and processes are in place to prevent and manage IPC, underpinned by relevant policies and procedures, which are understood and adhered to across the organization to ensure safe and effective healthcare.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Supporting the DIPC and advising the Trust in collaboration with Infection Prevention and Control teams across the wider health economy on the delivery of infection prevention and control programmes, including decontamination.
2. Providing expertise in infection management and control across various health settings, advising Estates, Facilities, operational teams, and pharmaceutical staff. Offering decontamination expertise and advice on all aspects related to infection prevention and control.
3. Providing visible clinical leadership and specialized advice to professional staff to promote continual improvement in IPC, and supporting staff with sensitive matters regarding risks to patients.
4. Offering guidance and expertise on complex IPC cases, leading investigations related to IPC, including patient safety incident responses.
5. Ensuring the Trust develops and implements systems for performance monitoring and improvement programmes aimed at reducing key infections such as MRSA, Clostridioides difficile, and Gram-negative bacteraemias.
6. Influencing and informing system-wide IPC strategies and programmes, working with ICS and ICP partners to contribute to population and place-level health improvements.
