Job Description – Junior Electrical and Electronics Engineer
Edinburgh Designs, the global market leader in wave and current research facilities, are looking to recruit an electrical and electronics engineer to join our engineering team in our Edinburgh design office.
You will be working as part of a world renowned, expert engineering team creating innovative electro-mechanical systems for our international client base.You will be responsible for the design and implementation of electrical and control systems for a large range of exciting projects, involving global travel and on-site experience.
Principle Responsibilities (Electrical)
·Specify and design the electrical and control systems for Edinburgh Designs’ wave, flow and carriage machines.
·Work closely alongside mechanical and software engineering teams to understand project requirements and conceptualise electrical systems.
·Design electrical cabinets from 10A to 1000A containing variable frequency drives, control PLCs, protective gear & switchgear confirming to BS EN 60439-1
·Supervision of assembly, testing and commissioning of systems.
·Identify and purchase critical long lead time items.
·Manage suppliers for deliverables and record stock
·Willingness to travel to site or supplier factories to supervise manufacturing, installation and commissioning, and carry out acceptance tests as required.
Principle Responsibilities (Electronic)
·Design of custom PCBs, using a combination of digital and analog design techniques, for use in machine control and sensing systems.
·Identify requirements for bespoke PCB over a future period and purchase as required
·Manage external PCB assembly companies, recommending alternative chips where lead times are adversely affected
·Inspect and supervise manufacturing and formal testing of devices.
·Diagnose faults on existing electronic hardware.
Essential Education and Skills
·Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
·At least 1 year practical experience working in a similar field
·Experience with LV electrical cabinet design, manufacture and testing
·Analog and digital circuit design skills.
·Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work with external partners and clients
·Good general understanding of wider engineering disciplines, including mechanical and control systems.
·Ability to understand documentation and datasheets for system components such as drives, microcontrollers and sensors.
·2D electrical CAD working
·Practical diagnostic and repair skills, including using oscilloscopes, soldering.
·A proven track record of problem solving and a keen ability to learn.
·Settled status in the UK
·Full driver’s license.
·Can-do attitude with ability to roll up sleeves to get the job done
·Strong written/oral communication and presentation skills.
Desired Skills
·PCB design software such as OrCAD
·PLC hardware knowledge
·System and protocols, physical layer knowledge for common industrial communications protocols
·Altera (Intel) FPGA system knowledge

The company is based in Edinburgh and specialises in wave making machines for research tanks around the world. Other work includes integration systems for towing carriages, moveable floors and other complex electro-mechanic hydrodynamic instruments.
