Overview

The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) employs around 12,000 MOD Civil Servants at over 300 locations. Ours is a diverse workforce, with roles ranging from trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff. There are many different functions and professions delivering key outputs for the Army. The successful applicant will be part of a small but lively team supporting vehicle maintenance, recovery and equipment care of a wide range of vehicles, including armoured tracked and wheeled vehicles. This position is advertised at 37 hours per week with the exciting opportunity to achieve that with a flexible approach.

As a Civil Service Vehicle Fitter, you will service and repair all systems within the vehicle including engine and exhaust systems, air brakes, air conditioning and electronics. Work will range from replacing parts, to solving complex faults using diagnostic methods and equipment. With evermore complex technologies, the tasks are constantly changing. As an experienced Vehicle Fitter in service and maintaining light or heavy vehicles you will continue to develop your trade knowledge on tracked vehicles and specialist artillery specific equipment.


Responsibilities

* Carry out a variety of maintenance and repair work on various military equipment.
* Visual inspections and care of military vehicles.
* Completion of all relevant documentation.
* Work with experienced System Technicians on more complex and extensive diagnostic and repair tasks.
* Ability to work in a team and as an individual.
* Ensure that appropriate quality standards are achieved and maintained in all aspects of their work, with interpretation and application of regulations where required.
* Comply with regulations published under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 insofar as they apply to the practices and processes carried out at their place of work.
* Carry out all aspects of mandatory training including Information Management Training and JAMES (an asset management tool) Training as required by role.
* Personal statement (250 words) detailing how you can demonstrate the skills and experience listed in the essential criteria in the advert.

Security and eligibility

Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check. People working with government assets must complete baseline personnel security standard checks.

Qualifications and competencies

* NVQ 3 or equivalent in light or heavy vehicle mechanical qualification, or VM Class 1 or Tri-Service Equivalent.
* NVQ 2 or equivalent in light or heavy vehicle mechanical qualification, or VM Class 2 or Tri-Service Equivalent.
* Passion and interest in vehicles and engineering.
* Motivated and a team player with good attention to detail.

Alongside your salary of £25,180, the MOD contributes £7,294 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Other benefits include:

Other information

The post does not offer relocation expenses. External recruits who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period. Travel expenses for interviews are not reimbursed. A review of pay-related allowances may affect the post. If you move from another employer, you may no longer access childcare vouchers.
