Power Supply Design Engineer
Location: Berkshire
Represented by: Ampere Recruitment
Overview
Ampere Recruitment is supporting a leading technology innovator in the search for a skilled Power Supply Design Engineer. The successful candidate will design and develop advanced switch-mode power supplies used across industrial and medical applications.
This role involves hands-on design of DC/DC and AC/DC converters using a wide range of modern topologies — including LLC, Flyback, Forward, Full-Bridge, Half-Bridge, and Resonant converters.
Key Responsibilities
Power Electronics Design
* Design, simulate, and validate DC/DC and AC/DC SMPS architectures from concept through to production.
* Select and implement appropriate topologies (LLC resonant, Phase-Shifted Full Bridge, Flyback, Forward, Buck/Boost, etc.).
* Develop high-efficiency power stages using Si, SiC, and GaN devices.
* Create and optimise magnetics (transformers & inductors) for resonant and hard-switched designs.
* Perform simulation and modelling using tools such as LTspice, PLECS, or similar.
Prototyping & Verification
* Build and test prototype circuits, evaluating thermal performance, efficiency, EMI/EMC behaviour, and reliability.
* Conduct design validation, fault analysis, and root-cause investigations.
* Support compliance testing (EN/UL standards, safety, EMC, isolation).
Product Development & Documentation
* Generate schematics, BOMs, test plans, design reports, and manufacturing documentation.
* Collaborate closely with mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to ensure smooth product integration.
* Support transition from prototype to mass production, ensuring design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for reliability (DFR).
Required Experience
* 3–10+ years’ experience in switch-mode power supply (SMPS) design.
* Strong understanding of power converter topologies (LLC, resonant converters, Flyback, Forward, Full Bridge, Half Bridge, PFC stages, etc.).
* Hands-on experience designing both AC/DC (up to 1kW+ ideal) and DC/DC converters.
* Ability to design magnetics or work closely with magnetics suppliers.
* Proficient with simulation tools (LTspice, PLECS, PSIM, or equivalent).
* Knowledge of safety standards, EMC considerations, thermal management, and PCB layout best practices for high-density supplies.
Preferred (Not Essential)
* Medical (60601), industrial (61010), or automotive design standards
* Familiarity with digital control (DSP/MCU-based power supplies)
What This Role Offers
* The chance to work on cutting-edge power electronics technologies
* Influence over topology selection and product architecture
* Exposure to advanced magnetics, resonant technologies, and high-efficiency platforms.
