Job Summary

An exciting opportunity within the award‑winning Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Service for the West Midlands. Recruiting a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the Principal Treatment Centre Team at QEHB for 9–12 months covering maternity leave.


Role Overview

The successful candidate will provide excellence in clinical care for teenagers and young adults (aged 16–24) with cancer and their families. Working within the Teenage Cancer Trust Young Persons Unit, you will play a key role in delivering age‑appropriate care in line with peer‑review measures, collaborating across hospital and site‑specific teams and the TYA CNS team to promote a cohesive approach to TYA care.


Key Responsibilities

* Work autonomously and exercise high clinical expertise in identifying and caring for the specific needs of TYA patients and their carers.
* Employ excellent interpersonal skills, knowledge of TYA cancers and sensitivity to diverse teams.
* Collaborate with the West Midlands Teenage Cancer Trust Lead Nurse, the QEHB TYA multidisciplinary team and the wider regional Band 7 nurses.
* Promote the philosophy and ethos of Teenage Cancer Trust in line with the charity’s strategic vision for nursing.
* Support professional development via attendance at the national Teenage Cancer Trust Nurses Professional Forum and other educational opportunities.
* Ensure safe and effective delivery of specialist care, including safeguarding, policy compliance and clinical governance.


Qualifications

* Essential: Registered Adult / Child Nurse on the NMC Register (field dependent upon role).
* Evidence of post‑registration CPD or postgraduate qualification (appropriate area of speciality or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short‑course to degree/masters level equivalent, FHEQ Level 6/7).
* Recognised mentorship course.
* Desirable: Working toward or holding an MSc/Masters qualification.
* Advanced health assessment module where applicable.
* Non‑medical prescriber or willingness to undertake where applicable.


Experience

* Essential: Evidence of revalidation as required by the NMC.
* Significant post‑registration experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Band 6 or above.
* Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level.
* Demonstrated achievements and career development, ongoing professional development and competence.
* Expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality.
* Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes, teaching, assessing and supervising others clinically.
* Experience working in multidisciplinary and cross‑agency environments.
* Experience in patient service‑user advocacy role.
* Demonstrated expert nursing knowledge with ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients, give advice and information to patients, relatives and care staff.
* Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the speciality.
* Understanding of the principles of safeguarding.
* Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance.
* Desirable: Experience of delivering change management as facilitator.
* Experience in service development.
* Awareness of current research related to the speciality.


Other Requirements

Disclosure and Barring Service check is required in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.

Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship will be considered. Current UK professional registration is required.


Contract & Salary

Pay scheme: Agenda for Change – Band 7. Salary: £49,387.00 to £56,515.00 per year.

Contract: Fixed‑term, 12 months duration, covering 9–12 months maternity leave. Working pattern: Part‑time, flexible working.

Location: Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Mindelsohn Way, Birmingham, West Midlands, B15 2TH.
