Clinical/Counselling Psychologist – Adult Inpatient Wards
We are pleased to offer the opportunity for a Psychologist to join our Inpatient Services in the Luton area of our Trust. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with other Psychologists and Assistant Psychologists across our 7 adult acute psychiatric inpatient wards.
Overview
As a psychologist dedicated to 1 or 2 ward teams, you will apply your expertise in clinical and risk assessments, develop formulations and care plans with service users, and provide guidance and formal consultation to the multidisciplinary team. You will supervise Assistant Psychologists and Trainee Psychologists. A key role is facilitating reflective practice and team formulation approaches to support staff wellbeing and to promote psychological understanding of complex cases. There are opportunities for community-based posts or protected research time for those working full-time hours, with options for hybrid roles.

Responsibilities
* Provide clinical and risk assessments, develop formulations and care plans with service users, and offer guidance and formal consultation to the MDT
* Supervise Assistant Psychologists and Trainee Psychologists
* Facilitate reflective practice and team formulation to support staff wellbeing and understanding of complex cases
* Contribute to service development and quality improvement projects on the wards
Person specification
Education/ qualification
* Essential: Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent and eligibility for BPS CPsychol (Chartered Psychologist)
* Essential: HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist
* Desirable: Further training in specialised areas of psychological practice
* Desirable: Quality Improvement Training
* Desirable: Clinical supervision training for doctoral psychology trainees
Experience
Essential criteria
* Post-qualification experience as a practitioner psychologist
* Experience across a wide range of client groups and clinical severities, including working in multidisciplinary settings and representing a psychological perspective in teams
* Experience in teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision
* Experience in service development and contributing to team and service improvements
Desirable criteria
* Experience in inpatient settings and in managing psychology staff
* Experience applying psychology across different cultural contexts
* Experience in recruitment of psychology staff
* Experience contributing to service redesign and improvements in secondary mental health services
Knowledge & skills
Essential criteria
* Doctoral-level knowledge of clinical psychology, lifespan development, psychopathology, psychometrics and neuropsychology
* Broad theoretical knowledge for formulation and treatment planning; proficient in two or more psychological therapies
* Expertise in clinical risk assessment and management
* Strong empathy and communication skills for clients, families, carers and professionals
* Ability to provide consultation to professional and non-professional groups
Desirable criteria
* Knowledge of secondary mental health settings (e.g., psychosis, personality disorder, complex trauma)
* Experience with research design, service evaluations and up-to-date knowledge of national guidance
* Record of publications in peer-reviewed or academic/professional journals

* Enthusiasm for a broad range of psychological phenomena and service delivery models
* Ability to manage organisational stress and to support others
* Capacity to concentrate for extended periods and manage highly distressing or emotional circumstances
