Overview
Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Paediatric Surgeon to join the team in Department of Paediatric Surgery and Urology at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. This is a locum post, in the first instance but has the possibility of becoming substantive in 1 year.
Hospital and Trust
Birmingham Children’s Hospital is part of Birmingham Women & Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. This comprises of 2 hospitals: Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) and Birmingham Women’s Hospital (BWH), and includes Forward Thinking Birmingham (FTB) providing CAMHS care. The hospital covers a population of over 5 million and provides secondary, tertiary and quaternary services. It is a designated Paediatric Major Trauma centre.
Paediatric Surgical service covers neonatal and general paediatric surgery, as well as gastroenterology, oncology, colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, major trauma and non-cardiac thoracic surgery.
The Department of Paediatric Surgery & Urology is made up of 13 Consultant Surgeons, 15 Tier 2 clinicians, 3 Clinical Nurses Specialist teams and 3 Physician Associates.
The Paediatric surgeons provide a comprehensive provision of Paediatric Surgical care – with the exception of HPB, which is provided separately within BCH.
Responsibilities
Paediatric Surgeons take part in a Paediatric Surgery On-call rota, providing a 24/7 service. This rota includes a week on-call (including the weekend), and then a week of outreach (which includes nights on-call).
This is a 10 PA job, including both elective and on-call commitments. This post does not include the provision of any Specialist Paediatric Urology.
Qualifications & Requirements
The successful applicant will be expected to have a subspecialty interest in Colorectal surgery (including anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and intestinal failure) and support in the provision of these areas of practice.
