Offer description

Applications are invited for a full-time substantive consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery who is fellowship trained in knee surgery including revision knee replacement. This post is a replacement post accounting for a reduction in activity from existing members of the department as they become more senior.

All future senior medical and dental appointments will be expected to work in collaboration across the Group and, irrespective of initial job description and job plan, be willing to work on more than one hospital site, dependent on service needs. Service location may change as our future models of care are developed by our clinically led networks through our acute clinical strategy. Some of the clinical procedures or services the appointee will be expected to deliver may be based at sites other than their primary site of employment. The Department


Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to carry out the whole spectrum of surgery within knee arthroplasty surgery managing their own elective practice, including outpatients, day cases and inpatients, as well as the full spectrum of trauma that is admitted to NNUH.

The successful candidate will need to be competent in primary management of all areas of acute trauma, although support in specialist areas such as paediatrics & spines is provided and referral of complex cases to colleagues with specialist interests is common. The new consultant should expect to receive referrals for complex problems related to their subspecialty interest. These cases will be accommodated in their elective / additional trauma lists.

All consultants in T&O at NNUH share office space, junior doctor & secretarial support & the successful candidate will be expected to do so on an equitable basis.

The trust supports the principle of mentoring for all new consultants and has plans to formally incorporate this into Trust policy in the near future.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full GMC Registration
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register with accreditation in Trauma & Orthopaedics via; o CCT (Proposed date within 6 months of the interview) or o CESR or o European Community Rights
* An appropriate higher surgical qualification in Orthopaedics
* Fellowship training knee and revision knee surgery.
* Compliant with Trust Child Safeguarding training requirements (within one month of taking up post)
* Current ATLS provider certification
* Fellowship level training in trauma management.
* Evidence supporting considerable experience in all aspects of general trauma surgery and own subspecialty orthopaedic surgery (logbook).
* Prepared to work in shared office space.
* Capable of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
* Enthusiasm for Teaching
* Team Worker
* Formal management training


Experience

* Considerable experience in General Orthopaedic trauma.
* Completion of research projects
* Experience as locum Consultant
* Presentation(s) at National/International meetings
* Publication(s) in peer reviewed journals


Training

* Enthusiastic attitude to training and a willingness to engage with ICSP, OCAP.
* Training the Trainers / Teaching the Teachers Course. Clinical supervisors' course
* Evidence of participation in deanery interview processes
* Keen interest in teaching at all levels of trainees both locally and nationally including FRCS (Orth) courses
* Formal Teaching / Training Qualifications
* Formal Teaching Post
* Evidence of supervision of projects presented at national level.


Audit / Governance

* Evidence supporting significant participation in Clinical Audit including evidence of successful completion of the "audit loop"


Circumstances

* Flexible outlook on working hours.
* Must live within a 15-mile radius of the base Trust or 30 minutes travelling time.
* Full Driving License willingness to travel as part of post


Communications and Language Skills

* Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues and support staff.
* Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English
* Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries


Other

* Flexible outlook on working practices.
* Full registration with GMC with license to practice

£109,725 to £145,478 a year per annum pro rata
