Salary: From £23,342 to £36,263 based on qualification and experience.

Contract: up to 14 months fixed term contract (maternity leave cover).

About us

The CRUK Scotland Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting‑edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world‑class metabolism studies and renowned in‑vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis.

Position outline

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join the Deep Phenotyping Advanced Technology facility (Prof Le Quesne), focussing on deep phenotyping technology using a combination of advanced in situ assay methods, tissue imaging, image analysis, and artificial intelligence. The deep phenotyping group aims to increase our understanding of the tumour microenvironment and morphology, and to use this knowledge to aid in the development of novel therapies.

We are looking for a Scientific Officer to join a team of translational histologists focussed on the application of quantitative histopathology assays. Daily duties include immunohistochemical staining, whole slide imaging, and the application of basic image analysis algorithms utilising our state‑of‑the‑art instrumentation (Ventana Discovery Ultra, Akoya PhenoImager, Akoya PhenoCycler, Visiopharm, 10x Xenium).

You should possess a BSc in biomedical science and/or an equivalent level of histology experience. It is essential to have experience of immunohistochemistry, and digital image analysis. Experience of working with human tissue in the application of the above techniques is desirable.

Previous experience working with multiplex assays, in situ hybridisation, digital pathology platforms, and image analysis is desirable but not essential as training will be provided; enthusiasm and potential are just as important.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team are essential.

For informal enquiries please email l.officer-jones@crukscotlandinstitute.ac.uk.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Our vision is to build and maintain a diverse and inclusive research culture based on our shared values of Innovate, Respect, Integrity, Teamwork and Excellence. These values, which underpin our behaviours and everything we do, allow all our people to realise their full potential. The diversity of our staff and students is also what makes the Institute a vibrant place to work and to advance discoveries in cancer research. Family‑friendly policies, our collaborative ethos, a focus on good mental health and well‑being and opportunities for all help to create an enjoyable and inclusive workplace where your voice matters.
