We are currently recruiting for a Lead in Geography to join our established Humanities Team at the school. This is an exciting opportunity to join Henley Bank High School and become an integral member of the team.

We are a successful secondary school based in Brockworth, extremely close to junction 11a of the M5. The school has consistently been achieving excellent academic results over the past few years with the GCSE results of 2023 being in the top 1% of results in the country, as well as the highest results for any non-selective school in Gloucestershire. We opened our Sixth Form in September 2024 and are really excited to see what the next stage in the school’s journey will be. A crucial element of the school’s vision is ensuing that we are preparing our young people for the world of tomorrow. This role plays an essential part in achieving this.

Role Overview

The Lead in Geography will support and work alongside the Head of Humanities to develop the department of leading initiatives and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students and to support a designated curriculum areas as appropriate

The successful candidate will:

1. Undertake a designated programme of planning and teaching across all key stages and to teach consistently high-quality lessons
2. Be passionate about their subject area
3. Show enthusiasm and have the experience of leading initiatives within the department
4. Will lead teachers, in collaboration with SLT, ensuring the highest quality, academically rigorous, challenging lessons are delivered
5. Work with SLT in the monitoring and supporting of the overall progress and development of students in the department
6. Facilitate and encourage a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential
7. Contribute to raising standards of student attainment
8. Will share and support the school’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for personal and academic growth
9. Present regularly to SLT on their findings and next steps for their remit
10. To lead departmental CPD, planned in collaboration with SLT

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

11. To act as a role model and an outstanding Lead in Geography
12. To lead on the development of the geography curriculum for all Key Stages
13. To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students and to support a designated curriculum area (Geography) as appropriate
14. Lead on curriculum developments within the subject area and share expertise within the department
15. Quality assure provision to ensure the highest standards
16. To deliver high quality, academically rigorous lessons
17. Keep up to date with new developments in Education
18. Lead improvements on outcomes and opportunities at a departmental level
19. To lead on the assessment and raising standards agenda within geography, working closely with and well supported by Head of Humanities and SLT
20. To share and support the school’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for personal and academic growth
21. To lead the intellectual preparation of shared resources
22. To share in the responsibility for, and commitment to, the safeguarding and promotion of the well-being and discipline of all students
23. Ensuring the curriculum planning necessary; incorporating whole school policies, contributing relevant units/components to other school syllabuses, as may be required
24. Encouraging the selection of suitable teaching and learning styles, materials and subject matter in providing a differentiated approach to students
25. Encouraging team members to keep abreast of developments in their subject areas
26. Monitor and analyse the academic performance of students on an ongoing basis
27. Devise and implement appropriate revision/intervention strategies
28. To perform particular assigned duties at the reasonable direction of the Head of Humanities, school Headteacher or their designated representatives
29. Attend regular team meetings for briefing, consultation, sharing of good practice and training
30. To provide subject information and an additional link with parents/carers and others in relation to work in your area
31. To plan and deliver schemes of work and lessons that meet the requirements of KS3, 4 and 5
32. To be a role model for students, inspiring them to be actively interested in your subject
33. To complete the relevant documentation to assist in the tracking of students
34. To prioritise and manage time effectively, ensuring continued professional development in line with the role
35. To follow the school policies and procedures
36. To ensure the effective/efficient deployment of classroom support
37. To maintain discipline in accordance with the school procedures, and to encourage good practice with regard to punctuality, behaviour, standards of work and homework
38. To update professional knowledge and expertise as appropriate to keep up to date with developments in teaching practice and methodology

You will need:

39. Hold at least 5 GCSE’s or equivalent, which must include at least a Grade C/5 in Maths and English
40. Hold a recognised degree (or equivalent) with a good classification in a relevant subject teaching qualification (QTS)
41. Experience of holding a position of responsibility
42. Previous Lead of Department experience within an Educational Setting
43. Evidence of independent personal developments and wide reading of the latest research
44. Be an excellent classroom practitioner
45. Ability to teach your subject area up to Key Stage 5
46. Knowledge of the latest subject specific thinking, including research and subject associations
47. Evidence of a positive impact on outcomes
48. Evidence of conducting lesson drop ins and coaching colleagues
49. Desire to further raise overall achievement in your subject that seeks to promote the highest standards of teaching and learning
50. Detailed knowledge of current curriculum and pedagogical developments in the teaching of your subject and the wider curriculum
51. A flexible approach to the teaching of your subject that seeks to promote the learning opportunities of all students and to secure the highest possible levels of achievement
52. Demonstrate a commitment to following the school’s principles of teaching, learning and assessment
