The role of Lead Radiographer of the Breast Centre and Wilshire Breast Screening Service involves managing NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and symptomatic breast services. The position is based at GWH Swindon and includes working on mobile screening units across Wiltshire.
In collaboration with the Director of Breast Screening and Programme Manager, the post holder will oversee operational management and strategic planning of the Wiltshire Breast Screening Service as part of the senior leadership team, combining clinical and management responsibilities.
The candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of the NHSBSP, maintain competency in all areas of breast radiography, including specialised assessment and symptomatic work, and engage in advanced practice as applicable.
The post involves leading and managing the mammographic team and radiographic aspects of the service, as well as the symptomatic breast imaging service alongside surgical teams.
Additionally, the post holder will be part of the overall senior leadership team across Imaging and will liaise between main Imaging and the Breast Centre.
Part-time applications are considered; this role is not for job share.
Main duties of the job
The main responsibilities include:
1. Leading and managing the mammographic team and radiographic service to ensure high-quality examinations delivered compassionately.
2. Ensuring staff work effectively within their scope of practice.
3. Conducting quality control checks on equipment and recording results to ensure patient safety.
4. Maintaining close links with the programme manager and SOM to meet demand and capacity requirements.
5. Undertaking audits such as technical recall/technical repeat audits required by SQAS.
6. Managing equipment changes, communicating timelines, and providing training.
7. Overseeing maintenance of mammography equipment, including timely replacements, physics surveys, and adherence to maintenance schedules.
The post also requires providing inter-professional leadership, ensuring clinical governance, and delivering a safe, effective service.

2. Monitoring service provision against waiting-time standards and activity levels.
3. Ensuring compliance with quality standards and NHSBSP targets.
4. Optimising workforce and equipment deployment to meet standards and turnaround times.
5. Preparing evidence for QA visits and working with QA radiographers.
6. Maintaining procedures for data validation, analysis, and reporting.
7. Developing and reviewing business, workforce, and service plans.
8. Participating in developing business cases and managing equipment procurement.
9. Ensuring facilities for mobile units and strategising to maximise appointment uptake.
10. Overseeing mobile unit siting and alternative site investigations.
11. Responding to complaints per Trust policies and liaising with legal teams.
12. Maintaining accurate records, ensuring confidentiality and GDPR compliance.
13. Implementing mobile unit movement changes to optimise coverage and uptake.
14. Developing standard operating procedures and planning workload.
15. Coordinating activities with external agencies and senior management.
16. Leading service development, staffing, and quality assurance activities.
17. Line managing radiographic staff and delegating management responsibilities.
18. Providing professional leadership and facilitating CPD and career development.
19. Ensuring statutory and legislative compliance, including IR(ME)R regulations.
20. Managing salary returns, equipment faults, and liaising on equipment maintenance and safety.
21. Leading meetings and maintaining professional autonomy within legal and ethical boundaries.
22. Serving as an expert on clinical imaging IT systems, including procurement and implementation.
