Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) are looking to recruit a forward-thinking and motivated Specialty Doctor in Microbiology to join our microbiology team delivering our clinical microbiology and virology services to WWL and other users within the local area. The posts present an excellent opportunity for experienced clinicians with comprehensive understanding of microbiology to join our dynamic team committed to the delivery of the highest standard of care.
The Trust has excellent postgraduate and research facilities and is an Associate Teaching Hospital of the University of Manchester. The Trust is also working with Edge Hill University and supporting the new Medical school resulting in opportunities to be involved in undergraduate education. Study leave for CPD is supported and assistance with funding is provided up to an agreed limit.
Please note, FRCPath Part 1 & Part 2 is an essential requirement for this role.
Main duties of the job
The Microbiology department at WWL delivers clinical microbiology and virology services to the trust, Primary Care and community services. The department provides an extensive range of bacteriology, serology and mycology services.
Successful applicants will make use of the laboratory services located at Salford Royal Hospital, delivered to both Trusts as part of a joint venture - Pathology at Wigan and Salford or “PAWS”.
Key interdependencies for the microbiology service include:
1. Clinical liaison service, including strong links with critical care
2. Laboratory support
3. Infection Prevention & Control team
4. Antimicrobial stewardship
5. MSK surgical services provided at Wrightington Hospital
The out of hours service is a 1:12 rota

On-Call
Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The main duties and responsibilities of the post include:
6. Providing a comprehensive microbiology & virology service
7. Sharing responsibility with colleagues at Wigan and Salford for providing a 24-hour, 7 day on-call service
8. Deputising for the infection control doctor, where applicable
9. Contributing towards antimicrobial stewardship
10. Complying with RCPath recommendations on appraisal and CPD
11. Contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education where applicable
12. Adhering to Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s policies on Clinical Governance.
The successful applicant will be expected to provide clinical advice by phone and e-mail, manage positive blood cultures and other urgent clinical samples, attend ward rounds, multi-disciplinary team meetings and relevant management and governance meetings, and to provide occasional support to laboratory scientific staff and members of the infection prevention and control team. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop a relevant subspecialty interest and to participate in research, subject to resources and local priorities.

Experience

16. Ability to work at consultant level in Clinical Microbiology
17. Ability to offer an expert opinion in Infection Control
18. Ability to offer an expert opinion in public health microbiology
19. Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
20. Experience of teaching medical students, and/or other relevant professional groups
Skills

21. Ability to use a computer and the internet
22. Ability to follow laboratory protocols
23. Proven organisational skills
