Overview
The Ophthalmology Department at Leicester Royal Infirmary is looking to recruit a visual field technician to join our team.
Key responsibilities
* Meet and greet patients, putting them at ease before assessing visual fields using computerised instruments.
* Assess visual fields using automated Humphrey perimeter and liaise with orthoptists as required.
* Use automated focimeter to measure spectacle prescriptions and interpret results.
* Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and professional colleagues, addressing language and comprehension barriers.
* Transport and support wheelchair patients.
* Instill eye drops as requested by medical staff.
* Assist in clinical teaching of new staff and demonstrate testing procedures to medical and nursing staff.
* Manage workload, allocate tasks and prioritise to ensure efficient service delivery.
* Perform administrative duties including using the HISS appointments system and recording investigations in patient records.
* Contribute to day‑to‑day running of the department, help write policies and procedures, and support team members.
* Consult with service users to ensure accurate understanding of requests.
* Participate in audits and collect data as required.
* Ensure equipment is well maintained, hygienic and decontaminated; report faults and arrange site visits.
* Maintain adequate supply of consumables.
* Attend all Trust mandatory training, have regular appraisals.
Working arrangements
* Post may include evenings and weekend shifts.
* Travel offsite to EMPCC (East Midlands Primary Care Centre) and other community sites.
* Full‑time and part‑time hours considered.

Qualifications & skills
* Evidence of good basic education.
* IT experience essential.
* Previous work with the public, preferably in the NHS, beneficial.
* All necessary training will be given.
