Job Description

It’s a fantastic time to work for the Environment Agency as we step forward to tackle the climate emergency. Do you want to help make England a better place to live and work in?
As a member of the FCRM Improvements Portfolio team, you will be supporting the Portfolio Management office and sub‑portfolio’s project and programme work, delivering over £150m of improvements in the next three years. You’ll play a critical role in helping us to better inform the changes we are delivering, enabling outcomes that protect communities and businesses from the devastating impacts of flooding.

Our Improvements Portfolio is a professional portfolio, programme and project management service in the Flood & Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) directorate. We drive innovation and continuous improvement across FCRM and Incident Management and play a key part in delivering our corporate and FCRM strategies and delivery plans. This covers almost all of the national business improvement in FCRM.

Responsibilities

* Start up and inform new projects, assisting in the assurance of live projects and supporting our project managers.
* Build relationships with the Portfolio Management Office and help improve and embed portfolio management and data practices.
* Assist with incident roles (usually virtual), responding to incidents or providing business continuity during an incident, with full training provided.
* Support innovative improvement projects contributing to the success of the National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy, Asset Management Strategy and Mapping, Modelling and Data Plans.

Qualifications and Experience

* Formal project / programme management experience is essential.
* Highly numerate with strong data gathering, manipulation and interpretation skills; able to work with large datasets and multiple users.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel required; experience of Power BI, Tableau or similar tools is desirable.
* Experience in a project support type role in a complex organisation using Agile and waterfall methodologies.
* Administrative and organisational skills, supporting regular meetings, agenda and minutes for the portfolio governance cycles.
* Financial data management and project planning skills desirable.
* Ability to gain credibility, respect and cooperation throughout the business by demonstrating appropriate collaborative behaviours.
* Experience in tackling and automating routine issues with a continuous improvement and problem‑solving mindset.
* Ability to work with uncertainty and find innovative solutions to solve problems.

Applications from those wanting full, shared or part‑time working arrangements are welcome.
There is good opportunity for blended home and office working. Our team is dispersed across the country and you can be based at one of our Environment Agency offices (subject to facilities approval). Some travel and overnight stay will be required.
