Job Description Summary
The Global Control & Protection Engineering Leader (HVDC PDG) leads engineering teams and is responsible for all aspects of HVDC Control & Protection Engineering. The leader designs and implements HVDC Control & Protection Systems by analysing customer requirements, assessing deviations from GSI standard solutions, and providing technical solutions that meet NPI, tendering and project delivery objectives. The scope of engineering and delivery includes:
- Control Automation System & Control System Hardware and HMI
- Control & Protection System Requirement, Design, Studies and System Integration testing
- Network & Cyber Security systems
- Integration of Control System with other equipment / systems
This person ensures teams have the tools, resources, and skills needed to deliver effectively and drives continuous improvement actions across the C&P organization, with a focus on quality, on‑time delivery and cost.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Develop the SQDC mindset and ensure KPI achievement for Right First Time, On‑time Delivery and Cost Adherence, focusing on improving lead time and cost‑out while maintaining safety and quality. Manage teams, assign tasks, provide guidance, and oversee project execution. Recruit, develop and mentor engineers, conduct competency assessments and implement development actions or succession plans. Foster collaboration and communication within the team and with other departments.
- Technical Strategy: Define the overall technical vision for control system design and architecture. Stay abreast of emerging control system technologies, identify opportunities for innovation, and develop PSCAD Network Models, Control MATLAB application models, system block diagrams, and conduct MATLAB unit and system integration testing. Manage PSSE/PSCAD and PSSE/RSCAD power system network conversion, modelling and verification. Perform HVDC electromagnetic transient simulations with PSCAD, EMTP‑RV, and plant modelling in MATLAB, RSCAD, PSCAD.
- Project Delivery for C&P scope: Drive planning and execution of control system projects from concept to deployment, including budget and timeline management. Ensure project plans contain necessary activities and studies to meet customer requirements. Manage engineering resources, workload, schedule, and milestones. Define the project WBS, required resources and skills. Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
Qualifications / Key Requirements
- Engineering degree: Bachelor’s in electrical or electronics engineering (Master’s or PhD in power systems, power electronics preferred).
- 10–15 years of HVDC experience with expertise in HVDC control and protection systems.
- Proven ability to lead and motivate large, cross‑functional teams, setting vision, delegating, and holding teams accountable.
- Knowledge of Lean and experience facilitating improvement workshops.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with a history of managing teams with strong technical backgrounds.
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving and communication skills at all organizational levels.
- Strong sense of urgency and ability to identify and manage technical risks.
- Proven global team leadership skills with technical depth.
