The Department of Data Science is seeking a researcher to contribute to assurance for autonomous systems, including Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAV).

As a Data Scientist, you will collaborate with a team to develop innovative solutions to societal and national challenges, including:
* Life Sciences & Health
* Climate Science
* Advanced Manufacturing
* Security and Resilience
This role offers opportunities to develop new collaborations across NPL, government, industry, and academia. You will enjoy developing, applying, and sharing knowledge with colleagues, collaborators, and the broader scientific community.
Please note, this role is internally referred to as 'Higher Scientist'.
Your responsibilities include applying machine learning methods to specific problems and overseeing aspects of quality management, risk management, testing, and assessment of AI systems that include machine learning.
**Essential experience:**
* A degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or relevant science or engineering discipline
* A PhD or significant relevant experience
* Experience in coding with Python and/or MATLAB
* Experience in mathematical modeling and data analysis
* Confidence in report writing and literature review
* Experience working in a cross-disciplinary environment
**Desirable experience:**
* Research experience in autonomous systems
* Uncertainty quantification
* Experience with Virtual Test Environments or Simulators (e.g., CARLA)
* Experience in object tracking or mapping software
* Knowledge of systems engineering, validation, and verification processes
