Job summary
An excellent opportunity has arisen to join our expanding patient-centred and supportive Gastroenterology department at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Our dedicated team aims to develop the Gastroenterology and Liver service and welcomes like-minded candidates to join us. This is an exciting time following a £4.0 million recurrent investment to support a blended workforce and a £4.5 million capital refurbishment of our Endoscopy unit in 2023/2024. Opportunities include supporting service development and outpatient transformation as we develop sub-specialty services and innovative outpatient pathways.
Our Gastroenterology and Liver service is among the busiest in the UK, offering a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. Our recently refurbished JAG-accredited Endoscopy unit performs approximately 15,000 procedures annually, serves as a training centre for the North-West Endoscopy training academy, and manages Bowel cancer screening in Lancashire.
The post holder should have broad Gastroenterology experience, including Endoscopy, contributing to core elective and emergency services, with a specialist interest in ERCP and EUS service development.
Main duties of the job
1. Shared inpatient care on the Gastroenterology ward, with a Consultant ward presence for 1 week every 6 weeks.
2. Contribute equally to inpatient care and the out-of-hours GI-Bleed endoscopy service, currently 1:6, with plans to extend to 1:8.
3. Participate in post-on-call activities, including Clinical Assessment Service triage, clinics, and fast-track assessments.
4. Elective activities such as outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists are mainly scheduled during a 5-week period off the ward.
5. The job plan includes 10 programmed activities, with formal review within 6 months.
6. Predictable emergency on-call duties for Gastroenterology/GI Bleeding, approximately 1.5 DCC, with additional unscheduled work as needed.
