As part of ongoing growth and development, the school is seeking a highly capable School Business Manager to lead operational, financial and administrative functions. This is a significant leadership role within the school, requiring a blend of financial acumen, operational oversight, strategic thinking and excellent communication skills. The SBM will be central to ensuring the school continues to run efficiently and sustainably, maintaining its outstanding provision and supporting future developments.
The Role:
The School Business Manager will oversee key operational functions including finance, HR, estates, procurement, health and safety, compliance, admissions processes and administrative systems. You will work closely with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team, providing strategic and operational leadership to ensure effective resource management across the school.
Financial responsibilities include budget planning, monitoring expenditure, producing accurate financial reports, managing audits, advising on cost-saving strategies, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. You will oversee payroll processes, financial systems, procurement procedures and supplier contracts, ensuring that best value principles are consistently applied.
Operational responsibilities include managing school facilities and premises, ensuring they are safe, functional and compliant; overseeing site staff; coordinating maintenance schedules; and contributing to long-term premises planning. You will implement robust health and safety procedures, conduct risk assessments and ensure that all compliance documentation is up to date.
As line manager for administrative, finance and premises teams, you will play an important role in developing staff, setting high standards and ensuring consistent professional practice. You will lead regular team meetings, monitor performance, provide guidance and ensure high levels of efficiency and productivity across all business functions.
In addition, you will support strategic planning for long-term school development, contribute to policy creation, support whole-school improvement priorities and work closely with governors on financial reporting and budget reviews.
The role requires someone with excellent organisational skills, resilience, the ability to manage multiple priorities and a strong commitment to maintaining the school’s outstanding operational standards. You must be confident working with data, producing clear reports, and communicating complex information in an accessible way to staff, governors and external stakeholders.
Requirements:
• Strong financial management experience (school or education sector preferred)
• Professional qualification such as CSBM, DSBM, AAT or equivalent desirable
• Experience leading teams in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent understanding of HR, payroll, compliance and health & safety processes
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing demands
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
