Job Summary:
SEGA is seeking a proactive, creative, adaptable, and collaborative Senior Legal Counsel to join our Legal & Business Affairs Team. This team supports SEGA Europes regional management, including SEGA West publishing and Sega West Studios, across various disciplines such as product development, marketing, sales, data privacy, and compliance. The role involves regular interaction with SEGA’s Legal teams in America and Japan on global issues.
The ideal candidate should have demonstrable commercial in-house experience within the video games sector. The role primarily involves transactional matters and providing regulatory and compliance advice, with opportunities to assist in disputes and property matters. You will also manage junior team members, making this role suitable for an in-house counsel with supervisory experience. Guidance will be provided by the SVP & Head of Legal, who have over 20 years of industry experience. A strong teamwork ethic and effective collaboration skills are essential.
Key Responsibilities
* Supporting all strategic business units within Sega, including Sega West Publishing, Sega West Studios, and Transmedia West, while collaborating with legal teams in the US and Japan to facilitate the global release of Sega games.
* Negotiating and drafting agreements for third-party vendors supporting development studios and other business units.
* Advising the business on existing and upcoming EMEA regulations to evaluate their impact on Sega’s operations and assisting the privacy and compliance team in implementing necessary measures.
* Advising on various agreements, including licensing, talent (artists, writers, musicians, voice-over artists), localisation, co-development, software licenses, and influencer agreements.
* Leading and supporting business development for distributing Sega games on subscription platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, Apple Arcade, and Game Pass.
* Managing and supervising the workload of junior legal team members.
* Supporting the SVP/Head of Legal on workstreams including studio acquisitions, property matters, and litigation/disputes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
* Qualified and experienced in-house lawyer with essential commercial experience in the video games industry.
* Proven experience in transactional, regulatory, and compliance advisory matters.
* Ability to manage a varied workload independently and deliver high-quality work within deadlines. Capable of supervising and leading team projects.
* Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to improving legal operations.
* Clear and concise communicator, both in writing and verbally.
