Airedale NHS Foundation Trust (ANHSFT), Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTHFT), and Harrogate District Hospital (HDH) have formed a joint venture, Integrated Pathology Solutions LLP (IPS) to provide a high-quality diagnostic and consultative service to clinical service users of both Hospital Trusts, and to primary and secondary care providers within the locality.
Applications are invited for a full time Medical Laboratory Assistant (Agenda for Change Band 2) in Haematology and Blood Transfusion based on the Airedale Hospital site.
Medical Laboratory Assistants are a key staff group within the pathology laboratory. Candidates will need to be enthusiastic, well-motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical skills. Team working and good communication skills are essential. Previous experience as Basic IT skills would also be an advantage. a Medical Laboratory Assistant will prove a distinct advantage at shortlisting.
The successful candidate will be required to work in all sections within the department. These areas include General Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion.
The department operates a 24/7 service. The required core working hours for this post are 12-8pm shifts Monday to Friday
Main duties of the job
Under supervision and following Standard Operating Procedures the following duties may be carried out.
Undertake in service training leading to the completion of the competency logbook
Working in line with supervisor to deliver core training to new staff members of all tasks within department.
Dealing with frequent telephone enquiries e.g. stock requests, bottle advice, giving results and directing calls to correct locations.
Face to face Pathology enquiries.
Liaise with and despatch consumables to service users.
Solve day to day problems e.g. Mislabelled specimens, determining minimal sample volumes, i.e insufficient samples, manual aliquots etc.
Sort and prepare consistently high volumes of work for daily diagnostic testing.
Prioritise workload to meet necessary turnaround times, including fast track and emergency work
Day to Day organisation of workload involving frequent sorting and pre-analytical processes to ensure appropriate testing of samples on all shifts.
Linking with supervisor to follow business continuity plans during periods of service outages, e.g. staffing, electrical or analyser
Input PID and other data into the laboratory computer systems in a distracting environment whilst maintaining concentration to ensure patient safety
Understanding urgency of accurate sample processing to meet duty of care to patients.
