The School Nurse will provide a clinically effective, high-quality service of nursing care to pupils and first aid care to all members of the School community.
This role will involve the successful candidate being the sole practitioner at times. In addition, they will also support the Sports Department on a Saturday when matches are played.
An en-suite room is provided in the Health Centre for the use of the Nurses whilst on sleep over rota.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Professional Standards
* To adhere to The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and be conversant with the scope of professional practice.
* To use evidence-based practice to develop and maintain a high quality of nursing care to the pupils.
* To ensure that a code of confidentiality, including the School Safeguarding Policy is adhered to.
Nursing
* To work within own scope of practice and liaise with the Health Centre Manager as required.
* To run nurse drop-in clinics during span of duty.
* To assess, evaluate, and implement in-patient care for pupils admitted to the Health Centre.
* To order and provide food and drinks for in-patients as required.
* To ensure that individual care plans are developed and written for pupils requiring them and make available to staff on a need-to-know basis.
* To provide a confidential health advice service as appropriate.
* To carry out adolescent surveillance programmes in conjunction with the rest of the nursing and medical team, which will include new pupil medicals.
* To be responsible for operating procedures for control of infectious diseases.
* To follow procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste.
* To be aware of recommended safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs.
* To maintain treatment room stock, hygiene, and tidiness.
* To develop and maintain good links and lines of communication with key staff whose primary responsibility is the duty of care of all the pupils in the School i.e. Housemasters and Housemistresses (HMMs).
* To organise doctors’ surgeries for boarding pupils registered with a School Medical Officer, including advising pupils to attend and make appointments.
* To arrange for boarding pupils to attend any medical, dental or other health appointments as necessary.
Health Education
* To promote health education on a one-to-one basis throughout the School population.
* To assist with larger group teaching as appropriate.
* To ensure the provision of, and access to, a range of publicity materials on issues relating to student health.
* To keep up to date with current health promotion initiatives.
To be involved in PSHE provisions, where appropriate, within the School’s PSHE programme for pupils.
Administration
* To maintain medical records accurately, confidentially, and safely.
* To keep nursing records to a high standard, ensuring the accurate and rapid retrieval of information.
* To record the dispensing of drugs and following drug protocols.
Health and Safety
* To have an involvement and awareness of health and safety issues within the School affecting staff, children, and/or the environment.
* To complete records of reported accidents.
* To work closely with the Health Centre Manager and other members of the Health Centre team to ensure seamless and continuous care, and with parents, academic staff, School support staff and all other departments as necessary.
* To work with House Tutors, the School Counsellor and other teaching and ancillary staff as necessary in the care of pupils within the School.
* To liaise with Doctors, Health Centre staff, pharmacies, physiotherapists, School health advisers and other members of the primary health care team. In addition, to liaise with Social Services where appropriate (after consultation with the designated Child Protection Officer).
Skills and Experience
* Possess a professional nursery qualification.
* A registered nurse on the NMC register with relevant post registration experience.
* Ability to communicate clear and concisely in a timely and appropriate fashion.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to listen well and understand other’s needs and perspectives.
* Ability to undertake all the physical requirements of the post and use equipment according to health and safety guidelines.
* Ability to meet objectives on own initiative with a systematic approach to organisation.
* Demonstrates an investigative mindset, using clinical reasoning and inquiry to assess patient needs, with the ability to be both well-prepared and adaptable when needed.
* A flexible and co-operative team player who is helpful, self-aware and can work alone and as part of a team.
* A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
* Experience as a Practice Nurse or School Nurse would be an advantage.
* Knowledge and experience with providing first aid and care to young people with chronic illnesses.
* Knowledge of iSAMS would be an advantage.
