Consultant Hand Surgeon

The main priority for this post will be to deliver the highest clinical standards in the practice of orthopaedic hand conditions. The post holder will contribute to the hand trauma rota and develop high quality research in trauma & elective orthopaedic hand surgery. The post holder will be provided with a mentor for a period of 1 - 2 years.
The successful candidate will be joining the hand unit in a busy Major Trauma Centre. The hand unit at The James Cook University Hospital is staffed by orthopaedic and plastics hand surgeons. We run an integrated hand trauma on call rota on a 1 in 6 week on call basis. There is no orthopaedic general trauma commitment. The hand trauma clinics are split into virtual and face to face clinics and these feed into regular hand trauma lists. It would be expected that the new consultant would be involved in cross site working between the James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.
A new surgical hub has recently opened at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. This will provide an environment for high volume low complexity work of which hand surgery will be a part.The theatre complex has a block room to facilitate efficient use of regional anaesthesia for upper limb lists.
Main duties of the job
There is an expectation that the new appointee would be involved in teaching and training. There are speciality registrars from orthopaedics and plastic surgery attached to the hand unit. The post holder will also contribute to research and audit within the department.
The main priority for this post would be to deliver the highest clinical standards in general hand and wrist conditions but there will be an opportunity to develop a subspeciality interest if desired.
We run a regular multidisciplinary team meeting including surgeons, trainees and hand therapists allowing support and good clinical governance. The successful candidate will be provided with a mentor for a period of 1-2 years.
About us
We have an academic unit with an excellent track record in surgical research. There are a number of ongoing trials in hand surgery (including SCOOTT for which Miss Emma Reay is chief investigator). Involvement in research would be encouraged and supported.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Skills
* Ability to organise and prioritise complex demands
* Willing to contribute to management duties within the NHS
* Experience of supervising resident medical staff
* Enthusiasm and ability to teach and mentor resident medical staff and other staffing groups
* Evidence of clinical research
* Evidence of management and administration experience
* Management training
* Success in obtaining funding for research
* Other teaching skills/experience
* Higher qualification in medical education
* Willingness to be involved in/lead further academic activity
Qualifications and Training
* On the GMC Specialist Register in orthopaedics or hand surgery or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
* Full GMC (London) registration
* FRCS (Orth), FRCS(Plast) or post graduate diploma in hand surgery
* Recognised approved hand fellowship
* An additional higher qualification relevant to the speciality
* Diploma in hand surgery
