Our direct delivery Water contractor client is seeking a Design Manager on a permanent basis to work on a hybrid basis out of their St Albans office.

Water sector experience is essential.
The company operates in the Water sector and others, focusing on: Tunnelling, MEICA, Temporary and permanent design, Steel-fabrication, Signs (design and fabrication), and Health & safety equipment including PPE.
You will deliver technical solutions aligned with the company's programme of work, ensuring technical compliance, quality, and appropriateness of solutions.
You will lead design consultants and multi-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver design solutions on schedule and within budget.
Responsibilities include providing concept, basic, and detailed design solutions based on client and site-specific requirements for water treatment, pipelines, trunk mains, sewers, pumping stations, and networks.
Ensure timely delivery of technical solutions to meet project schedules and company objectives.
Responsibilities
1. Take ownership of the technical appropriateness of project solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
2. Ensure design work complies with customer and statutory standards, regulations, and specifications.
3. Manage external design consultants and contractual obligations.
4. Develop and deliver robust, reliable, and maintainable asset designs that meet project objectives.
5. Manage multi-disciplinary teams, including internal engineers, consultants, and partners.
6. Manage engineering budgets and schedules, reviewing with the head of engineering before submission to the Project Manager.
7. Implement change control processes to manage scope, budget, and schedule changes.
8. Ensure all engineering outputs comply with health and safety legislation, quality management systems, and standards.
9. Evaluate designs and solutions.
10. Support supply chain selection for specialized input.
11. Collaborate with technical, operational, maintenance, and strategic stakeholders.
12. Liaise with Engineering and Project Managers regarding project issues, scope changes, and risks.
13. Understand Temporary Works design and responsibilities, engaging internal and external designers as needed.
Skills, experience, and qualifications
* Ideally 10 years of design and management experience.
* Experience with wastewater drainage systems.
* Knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and data environments.
* Degree/HNC in civil engineering or equivalent.
* Member of a recognized engineering institution, with aspirations towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.
* Excellent communication skills for effective liaising with clients and staff.
* Self-driven, results-oriented, with a positive outlook.
* Salary range: £60,000 - £80,000.
