Job Description
Manage the UK & Ireland core network infrastructure, including POP sites, transit interconnection, peering, and fibre backhaul at Reading Data Centre. Oversee routing and switching layers behind our hosting products, ensuring 100% service availability, resilience, quick fault resolution, and capacity planning.
Collaborate with Development and Support teams to resolve issues and develop troubleshooting tools. The role requires 8-10 years in IT Systems, with at least 5 years in network engineering within ISP industry, and a relevant technical degree is preferred. You should be proactive, capable of designing scalable, resilient networks from conception to expansion, and experienced with multiple vendor equipment.
Potentially act as Project Manager, coordinate project teams, and lead change initiatives, coaching staff as needed.
Key responsibilities
* Support existing platforms and ensure 24/7 uptime
* Maintain and install equipment from vendors like Juniper, Nokia, Arista
* Support Nokia OTN and DWDM systems
* Integrate new vendor equipment
* Design and scale network infrastructure
* Support Linux servers for network and provisioning systems
* Monitor hardware health and troubleshoot issues
* Serve as escalation point and technical resource
* Support key clients and manage vendor relationships
* Plan for equipment EOL/EOS
* Manage IP allocations and liaise with RIPE
* Document solutions, train staff, and develop new products/services
* Upgrade hardware/software, implement improvements
* Monitor logs, join on-call support, and travel as needed
* Ensure network capacity, performance, and safety compliance
Required skills and experience
* Strong IT skills in Internet environment
* Problem-solving resilience
* Excellent communication skills
* Expertise in TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, VLANs, OSI Model
* Knowledge of IPv6, MPLS, failover, high availability
* Experience with route-servers, Ethernet, optical standards
* Proficiency with Cisco or Juniper equipment
* Knowledge of Linux, server hardware, data centre practices
* Project management skills and a full UK driving license

Working hours
